What things did you learn to accept as “normal” in the music world, when in reality it’s actually kinda toxic?

The music world has normalized things that aren’t healthy, and often, they’re not even questioned.

🎺 Shaming mistakes instead of embracing learning.

🎶 Calling unpaid gigs “opportunities.”

🧠 Ignoring performance anxiety and mental health.

👤 Expecting musicians to sacrifice every part of themselves for their art.

🚪 Gatekeeping careers and styles of music.

None of this is normal. None of this is sustainable.

The truth? Musicians thrive when we have supportive teachers, fair pay, balanced lives, and communities that celebrate different paths in music.

Let’s stop pretending these toxic “norms” are okay.

Finally got the recording from my recital and I’m so happy with how it turned out! Here’s one of my favourite parts from Napoli 🤗

Recorded some excerpts the other day and the camera just kept rolling after I was finished. I’m glad we caught this happy moment! Recording for auditions has always been stressful for me, but I’m slowly getting better at changing my mindset so that I don’t beat myself up the whole time.

Inspired by the release of the newest ACOTAR book by @sarahjmaas - I’m now brainstorming ideas for my own series. Maybe my students will read these books! 📚

It was wonderful to host the incredible @ashleyhalltighe here at @umduluth_musicdept and learn about mental resilience, performance anxiety, musicality, playing efficiently, and so much more.

I love when you can practice multiple things in one session. Warming up for trumpet AND getting comfortable with the melodies for ear training 🤗

I’ve always believed that singing can make you a better trumpet player and I’m so fortunate to have gotten to work with some great voice teachers including @karensantosartist who have helped me understand my voice better.

this flexibility exercise was introduced to me by Dr. Amy Gilreath when I was studying at UIUC, and it has continued to be a staple in my routine. What exercise have you kept in your routine over the years?

Also peep the cute hat from @nat.tpt 💙
