Prison break —Episode 4️⃣ of a series that changed how I see animal tourism.

I was still in shock after seeing the zoo’s lion (Ep.2), when I numbly passed by the monkey’s glass box. I looked without really looking, until this little guy jumped to the glass, to me. I placed my hand on the glass and met his eyes —completely lost. Lost because he’s not where he’s supposed to be.

In the wild, monkeys travel miles every day. They leap through canopies, forage, problem-solve, make hundreds of choices. Their world is endless.

In captivity, they get the same walls. The same view. The same routine. No forest. No freedom. No control over anything.

That glass between us? It wasn’t just a barrier. It was everything that’s wrong with how we treat wild animals.

I looked into his eyes and saw something I’ll never forget — not sadness, but emptiness. The look of a soul with nowhere to go.

Monkeys 🐒 were never meant to live like this. They deserve the trees. The wild. The life that was stolen from them.

“Mom wait!” 🐘 that little run gets me every time 🥹 This little baby was curious about us and stopped to look more than once, but also made sure to always stay close to mom…

World Elephant Day (12 August) brought back this core memory and reminded me how lucky I am to have had the chance to experience unforgettable wildlife encounters alongside @pondoro_game_lodge’s incredible team. 🩶
Forever grateful.

And of course, even if I’m a little late: happy World Elephant Day!! to all animal lovers, to those caring for them with their whole heart ( @sheldricktrust ), to those healing their wounds and rewilding them (@savetheelephants ), to those fighting to free them from slavery and captivity (@planting_peace), and above all, happy World Elephant Day to this adorable little family 🩶

🐘 She lost her best friend after 40 years of being inseparable.

Taken — Episode 8️⃣ of a series that changed how I see animal tourism.

Sofia, a female Asian elephant living at @bioparcoroma lost her best friend Nelly in 2012 and she didn’t even get to grieve her.

Not like she would in the wild.

Elephants grieve their dead for weeks, they return to touch the bones of the ones they have lost.

They remember everything.

And in Sofia’s case, I wish that wasn’t true.

💔Here is her story:

Sofia was born wild in Assam, India around 1970.
She was only two years old when she was captured and taken from everything she knew. She passed through Turin before arriving in Rome in 1972, alongside another young elephant named Nelly. They were the same age. And they were inseparable from the start.

For 40 years, they did everything together. They were each other’s comfort within the cold walls of their fenced new home. Nelly was the dominant one, the protector, while Sofia was and remains the emotional one, always seeking for interaction and in desperate need of connection.

In 2000, the zoo tried to introduce new elephants: Lakshmi and Sancho, both former circus animals. But Sofia and Nelly’s bond was so tight that they rejected the newcomers. The tension became dangerous. By 2002, Lakshmi and Sancho were sent away to another facility.

Sofia and Nelly stayed together. When sadly, on October 18, 2012, Nelly died. Leaving Sofia all alone for the first time in her life.

Nine months later, Lakshmi returned, brought back specifically to keep Sofia company after a decade apart. They live together now. But keepers say it’s not the same. Lakshmi is independent, dominant. Sofia is still grieving. Still searching for the bond she lost. In captivity she doesn’t get to choose who to spend her life with.

Elephants 🐘 were never meant to live like this. They deserve the forest and their favorite trees, their family, and above all, they deserve freedom.
