While this country goes to hell in a handbasket, i may as well share something that’s been making me happy: wood working.

Working with wood is a lot like working with people. Every piece is warped in its own unique way. 😁
I’m not looking to start a side business, but i may sell a piece or two on occasion.
Really, it’s about embracing the challenge of working with an imperfect material and finding joy in its imperfections, and my own.

My goal as a musician has always been to inspire someone else to pick up an instrument.
I remember listening to Led Zeppelin II and thinking, “this is awesome! Can i do that?!”
(Truth be told, i still have a bit of anxiety playing JPJ’s basslines, worried that i won’t do them justice. It’s purely hero worship, i know.)
I’d like to think i’ve inspired someone, or a few someones over the years, but i don’t know. I may never know.
With the world as strange as it is today, i’m thankful to still get to play, and in doing so, get more chances to inspire somebody.

(And please, don’t tell JPJ that i nerd out over his basslines. I want him to think i’m cool.)

2025 has already been a strange year, and not in a lot of good ways.
But we have to celebrate the wins when we have them. In that spirit, i’m sharing something that frankly, is still a little odd to me.
I’ve been looking for more excuses to drag my double bass out of the house. I’m not great at it, but you’ve gotta start somehwere, right? So, i started a project for fun. (Remember when we used to play music for fun?!? Seems like an eternity ago!)
Billed as Soetaert & Associates, i’m not sure if it’s a party band masquerading as a jazz trio, or a jazz trio that thinks it’s a party band.
Either way, i’ve already had the joy of playing with some great players and doing some goofy stuff under the pretense of “jazz”.
It’s not gonna take the world by storm, and there are already bands out there that do it so much better than i ever could (@thebadplus) but it keeps me entertained.
Plus, it’s interesting to be on the other side of the call sheet.
Anyhoo, i count that as a win, and i’ll take ‘em whenever i can get them.
