We had a fantastic time filming with our friend Mark Crawford on the Spring River today! They truly have a special fishery and an even better community of kind, friendly people in Mammoth Springs.

REVIVAL! by @trout_magnet

This is what happens when you crack the code! by @trout_magnet

There are a few days on the water that stand out in my mind because they taught me just how much color can matter. One of those days is the first time I really saw what would eventually become the Sowbug Trout Magnet.

I was fishing the Little Red River with a friend of mine—we called him Q.

Q had gotten his hands on a few mess-up Trout Magnets that were made when the machine was changing from white to black. One of those colors ended up being a pretty plain-looking gray. Nothing about it really jumped out at you.

That day, we were catching a few fish, but the bite just wasn’t quite right. We knew there were plenty of trout around, but it seemed like a lot of fish were seeing our baits and saying no.

Then Q put on that gray Trout Magnet.

He caught one.

Then he caught another.

Then he caught a brown trout.

Before long, Q was absolutely kicking my butt.

Eventually, he was kind enough to share a few with me, and it became pretty obvious that this wasn’t just a coincidence. That simple gray color was getting fish to eat when the other colors weren’t.

What really caught my attention was that it wasn’t only catching stocked rainbows. It was catching wild brown trout too.

On the Little Red, I pay close attention when a color consistently catches both. Those wild browns can be pretty good judges of whether you have something that looks right.

That gray mess-up eventually became the color we now call Sowbug.

It’s still one of my favorite Trout Magnet colors, but I probably remember the lesson behind it even more than the color itself.

Sometimes the best fishing discoveries happen by accident—and sometimes the best lessons are learned when a friend catches more fish than you.

We always enjoy hearing how anglers are using Trout Magnets in different situations.

Adam recently sent us a report from a trip to the North Carolina coast. He normally fly fishes, but decided to try Trout Magnets with his 8-weight fly rod—and said the saltwater fish absolutely loved them.

They worked so well that he kept fishing Trout Magnets until he ran out by the end of the week.

We love seeing anglers take a bait they already trust and find new ways to use it.
Thanks for sharing the report, Adam!

Why does a Trout Magnet work? by @trout_magnet

To a brown trout, white and chartreuse can be hard to ignore. That bright contrast is a great way to trigger a reaction bite—especially on a D2 Jig.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since we launched the Mop Drop.

Since then, we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback and all the fish you’ve caught with it.
