Meet Nohle Mohapi Mbesthu, a South African anti-apartheid activist and community worker who played a significant role in the Black Consciousness Movement.

She worked alongside Steve Biko in the Black Community Programmes and endured years of state harassment, detention and torture following the murder of her husband, Mapetla Mohapi, in police custody in 1976.

In 1996, she made history as the first person to testify at the TRC hearings in East London, sharing her painful experiences and her husband's story.

Beyond her activism, Nohle dedicated herself to youth development, organising winter classes to improve educational opportunities for Black children.
