Riders | Kitchen | Infrastructure

What does cooking and eating mean to human beings in a hyper-technological era? We now spend barely 30 minutes preparing a meal; takeaway is often cheaper than raw ingredients, and urban dwellers can rarely cook three dishes from memory. The elemental, cultural ritual of nourishing ourselves has become a cold municipal utility.

Under this technological regime, we have begun to demoralize and strip the human meaning from the delivery rider. No longer recognized as living human beings with dignity, fatigue, and interior lives, couriers are treated as mechanical pawns, replaceable biological engines, and gamified telemetry markers speeding through urban canyons to satisfy algorithmic appetites.

The architecture exaggerates this trajectory into a monumental infrastructure: elevated multi-lane racetracks, Pit Lanes for rapid battery and nutrient swaps, and suspended automated dark kitchens. Through the spatial vessel of motorsport, the project confronts our complicity in reducing human life to algorithmic pawns for the illusion of friction-free convenience.

Reconnecting Through Ritual: A Living Architecture in Dali Village

The project proposes a way to remind and celebrate our connection to the ground through the medium of architecture, not only confined to the snippets at the start but throughout the lifespan of the building.

Different tall towers dotted around the site, forming the edge of the pitch, acting as artefacts or totem symbolising the moments of ground-breaking ceremonies, which we connect and pay respect to the ground. The kinetic movement utilises the village population, reminiscing about the ceremonial moments, creating a form of ritual. The process itself translates the ground-breaking moments into forms of architecture, in which the operation of this architecture becomes ceremonial.

The drama formed by these movement forms the centre stage of the project. It is only when it becomes a spectacle, operated by the people of the village, the connection of us and the ground through architecture is evident.

The building itself is a rebuilt local primary school, occupying the original school grounds. Each structure is placed by a grid drawn out using the surrounding context. The buildings themselves are humble, following the form and structures of the local vernacular buildings, in contrast with the tall towers controlling the kinetic side of the project. These towering totems are colourful and flamboyant, inspired by the rich local customs. Whereas the buildings themselves, are mostly designed to sit within the village unintrusively. The school, which is its daily operation largely blend into the village scape cohesively. However, when the ground becomes needed for festivals, football or community, the architecture unfolds. The movements can sometimes form new spaces, whereas some creates movements for the spectacle such as floodlights and scoreboard which can change alongside the festivity happening on the ground.

Reconnecting Through Ritual: A Living Architecture in Dali Village
This project proposes a way to remind and celebrate our connection to the ground through the medium of architecture—not just in isolated moments, but throughout the lifespan and operation of the building.
The final design is a rebuilt primary school, occupying the original site, replacing the outdated and disused ground. In its default state, it serves as a school during daily operation. But when the ground is needed for festivals, football matches, or community gatherings, the building unfolds into a stadium and community centre—a space for assembly and celebration.
Each structure of the project is placed according to a grid drawn from the village context, aligning with existing spatial patterns. The architectural forms remain humble and grounded, echoing local vernacular buildings and utilising local materials such as Chinese fir wood. In contrast, the towering kinetic totems are flamboyant, spectacular, and colourful, inspired by the village’s vibrant customs.
The kinetic towers, positioned around the pitch, act as totemic artefacts, symbolic of ground-breaking moments. The movement is made possible by utilising the whole village, transforming routine operations into ceremonial acts. These movements are not designed to be easy, but it is the hard work that truly reminds us of our connection to the ground. Some structures reveal new spaces; others become functional elements like floodlights or scoreboards, adapting to the needs of the community spectacle.
The architecture thus becomes a living ritual—its transformation not just functional but a symbolic spectacle that unites people, celebrates tradition, and continuously reaffirms our relationship to the ground.

Project R(E)TUAL

Formed by the necessity created by the land condition like steep slope and tight spaces. Collectively unfolding prefabricated, pre-assembled structures; Utilising thin cables and by having minimal support, creating a poetic performative system.

The Project R(E)TUAL proposes an updated way of construction yet maintaining the poetic original approach. The process upholds the original approach and showcasing the construction in a performative fashion; Collectively unfolding prefabricated, pre-assembled flat pack structures aesthetically utilising cables and minimal support.

UG4 2022 The Arches@Nine Elms Leo Tse

The inspiration for the project originated from the niche discovery of the rich boxing history in London Chinatown. However, upon a detailed research review of the surroundings of Chinatown, it became apparent that an additional boxing gym would not contribute any additional value to the community already saturated with such facilities. As a result, the site has been subsequently moved to Nine Elms.

Nine Elms has been scrutinised heavily due to the discrimination surrounding access to the Sky Pool, a 25-metre-long transparent swimming pool suspended between two 10-storey towers. The statement engineering masterpiece is exclusive only to the residents of the luxury housing development, Embassy Gardens (EG). The residents of the affordable housing of EG development are barred from accessing the pool even if they are willing to pay for entry.

The proposal aims to address the complex issue of class discrimination through a multi-dimensional programme. The programme centres around a communal boxing gym enriched with a social space and a physiotherapy clinic to address the high injury rate of the intensive combat sport.

The rich railway history of Nine Elms is the main driving factor of the project. The arch is a common element seen throughout historical railway designs. To pay respect and to acknowledge such history, the arch becomes the centrepiece of the architecture through the modulization of the façade.
