Today is Indigenous Peoples Day.
TXRD knows Indigenous people are not a footnote to American history. Indigenous nations, cultures, languages, and communities are thriving, organizing, creating and fighting for sovereignty and self-determination.

Colonization tried to erase Indigenous identity through violence, displacement, forced assimilation, and the suppression of language and culture, but it didn’t work.
Indigenous people are here. Indigenous people have always been here, and they’re not going anywhere.
Indigenous and Latine identities are not mutually exclusive. For many people, they are inseparable. That history of colonization and cultural erasure runs deep.
Today, we honor the Indigenous people who have cared for these lands since time immemorial, including Indigenous communities of Central Texas.

Our honor needs action:
SUPPORT LOCALLY: Donate to the Native American Cultural Center / Austin Powwow, supporting Native culture, community, youth, and heritage.

SUPPORT THE INTERSECTION: Donate to Red Salmon Arts, an Austin grassroots organization supporting Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x, and Native communities through culture, literature, and social justice.

Listen to Indigenous voices. Support Indigenous-led work. Fight erasure.

No disappearing people from their own history.

As we celebrate Latine Heritage Month, we honor the skaters, officials, volunteers, artists, organizers, fans, and neighbors whose talent, resilience, culture, and joy strengthen our communities every single day.

Latine Heritage Month is about honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of people with roots across Latin America while recognizing that there is no one Latine experience. Our community is made stronger by every language spoken and every story shared.
And joy is powerful.
Because while we’re celebrating, we’re also watching immigrant communities across Texas and beyond continue to be targeted. Families are being separated. People seeking safety are treated like criminals. Racism and xenophobia are being repackaged as policy. We reject all of it.

Roller derby has always been about building the world we want to live in; not waiting for someone else to build it for us. We believe our communities are stronger because of immigrants and folks indigenous to this land. We believe everyone deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to exist without fear.

This month and all months, volunteer with organizations defending immigrant rights. Know your rights, help your neighbors know theirs, and keep showing up for your community…even when it isn’t easy.

¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Latina! ✊❤️
