We thought it was about time we introduced ourselves! We are Emma Flynn and Luke Royffe, architects, designers and the founders of Tŷ Clai. We established Tŷ Clai in 2024 as a house, a pottery and an extension of our wider design practice, @royffeflynn. Our work moves between architecture, landscape, interiors and objects, but always begins with the same questions: how materials are put together, how places are inhabited and how things change through use. After more than ten years in London, we returned to Pembrokeshire to be closer to Emma’s family while raising a family of our own. Our work continues to take us elsewhere, from projects in Greece to Australia, but Tŷ Clai has become the place where the different parts of our practice come together. The project began with the repair of an empty and neglected building on Fishguard’s high street. Rather than remaking it entirely, we worked with what was already there: retaining uneven walls, worn surfaces and ordinary materials, while introducing new elements carefully. Our ceramic work grew from the same approach. It is another way of exploring material, form and use, only at a different scale. We are interested in everything from the structure of a building to the objects, surfaces and collections that give a room its character. Tŷ Clai is where we draw, test, make, repair, arrange and live with things. It is a space shaped by architecture, craft and the landscape of Pembrokeshire; one that continues to evolve with us. Head to www.tyclai.com for more information and sign up to our Studio Notes for new work, gatherings and notes from the house and pottery. Thank you for your continued support, it means a lot. Stay at Tŷ Clai Tŷ Clai is a 3-bedroom townhouse and pottery in Abergwaun, Pembrokeshire. Pottery workshops can be arranged as part of your stay. Tŷ Clai sits on the high street, close to shops, cafés, pubs and the weekly market. The harbour, the sea and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path are around ten minutes away on foot. The house is arranged over three floors and sleeps six people in three double bedrooms. The kitchen, dining room, sitting room and snug are on the first floor. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a large bathroom with a copper roll-top bath and walk-in shower. The house was repaired slowly, keeping the stone, timber, lime and older surfaces where possible. New work sits alongside what was already there. Furniture, ceramics, books and objects have been added over time and continue to change with the use of the house. On the ground floor is a separate workspace with its own kitchen, a library and a large table for twelve. It can be used for working, reading, drawing, making or eating together. Guests have private use of the space during their stay. Behind the house is a long south-west-facing garden with fruit trees, planting and places to sit. There is a large table for eating outside, along with a pizza oven, barbecue and fire pit. Two private parking spaces sit beyond the garden. The pottery forms part of the house. Private group or individual ceramics workshops can be arranged during a stay. The sessions can be built around your interests and experience, get in touch to discuss with us prior to booking. This is an image of the front facade and shopfront of Ty Clai Townhouse and Pottery. It’s a lovely evening. Our signage isn’t quite ready yet but will be installed soon. The left-hand shop is our pottery, and the right-hand side is our architectural and creative studio. The bay windows of the townhouse above offer a wonderful view of the surrounding area. #TyClai #Shopfront #Townhouse #Pottery #ArchitectureOffice #EveningView by @ty.clai

Autumn in Pembrokeshire. At Strumble Head, we’ve been watching grey seals play in the channel below the lighthouse. Their heads appear between the waves, disappear, then surface a little further along. From the path, you can follow their movement through the water, close to the edges of the rocks. The weather is beginning to turn. Stormy seas and low cloud give way to bright sunshine. On the sheltered beaches beneath the cliffs, this year’s pups lie among the pebbles, their white coats standing out against the darker shore. Autumn is pupping season here. The folds of the coastline make room for these small, secluded places, and the paths around the headland offer views into them. We watch quietly from above, leaving the beaches undisturbed. by @ty.clai
Our Welsh cottage lanterns and incense burners bring together our work in ceramics and architecture, drawing on the proportions and details of rural Welsh buildings. Each is hand-built in stoneware and finished in a matt white glaze. Pitched roofs, small windows and chimneys give the cottages their familiar outlines. In use, light shines through the lantern windows, while incense smoke rises from the burners’ chimneys. Available on our website via the link below. by @ty.clai
Our ceramic collection, Wave Series, explores he relationship between form, pattern and glaze. While the distinctive wave remains a constant, subtle differences in scale, colour and finish give each piece its own character. Made by hand at Tŷ Clai, the Wave Series is available in limited numbers on our website. Photography by @indiahobson by @ty.clai
Workshops at Tŷ Clai Our Welsh Vernaculars workshops take the forms and details of the Welsh cottage as a starting point for working with clay. Held monthly at Tŷ Clai, each workshop offers a full day in the studio, making a cottage lantern or incense burner with guidance at each stage. Groups are limited to seven, and both beginners and more experienced makers are welcome. Forthcoming dates: Saturday 16 January

Wave ramen bowls in peat. A deep brown glaze, drawn from the colours of the Pembrokeshire landscape. Thrown and painted by hand in our West Wales studio, with a wave pattern that repeats around the form. Small shifts in line, shape and glaze run through the series. Tŷ Clai is featured in @toast Autumn Winter 2026 Printed Book. Now in its 29th year, the publication reflects seasonal concepts and celebrates the makers and creatives behind TOAST collections. This season, the book considers the rituals and rites that signal our movement through the seasons. Spanning the seasonal equinoxes, it looks at what connects us across time and cultures, and celebrates the cyclical practices that connect us to each other, to the land and to our homes. The Autumn Winter 2026 edition of the Printed Book will be delivered in online orders and can be found in TOAST shops now. by @ty.clai
From Abergwaun to New York. Our Wave Mugs and Ramen Bowls are now available at TOAST in the US, online at @toast and in their stores, including New York and Los Angeles. Our UK online shop has also been restocked with a limited selection of Wave Series ceramics and one-off pieces. Shop the pieces pictured through the link below or in our bio. The Wave Series combines hand-thrown forms with hand-painted patterns, in colours drawn from the Pembrokeshire landscape. Peat browns, mineral whites and darker glazes reflect the material character of the coast: earth, rock, water and weather. Each wave is painted using a wax-resist technique, with small variations in line, shape and glaze giving every piece its own character. We photographed the collection with @indiahobson at an old lookout on Strumble Head, one of our favourite places near Tŷ Clai. Here the land falls away to the sea, and the sea meets the sky. The hard lines of the lookout sit against the movement of the water and the softer contours of the land. It is this meeting of the natural and the made, and the way material, weather and use become visible at the surface, that continues to inform our work. Made, glazed and fired in our studio in Abergwaun, West Wales, these are pieces made for everyday use. by @ty.clai
Our Wave ramen bowls are made here by hand in our studio in Abergwaun (Fishguard). Using white stoneware clay, once dried and fired we hand paint a wax resist wave detail on each bowl. The bowl is then dipped in this red rust glaze which turns into a deep black-brown “peat” coloured glaze, when it is fired for the second time. A small number of these bowls will be added to the website on 15th October. by @ty.clai
