Are you doing your drill work correctly?

Drill work is crucial for specialists. I truly believe that the work you put in outside of your actual kicking sessions is what determines how good of a specialist you’re going to be. So if it matters that much, doing it correctly becomes even more important.

Whatever you’re trying to improve, your drill work should emphasize it.

Here’s what I mean — going into my first year in the CFL, I was punting great. I was consistently hitting 55+ yard balls with hang times in the 4.1–4.3 range. But heading into the next season with NFL goals, I knew my hang time needed to improve. So I overemphasized that in my drill work. Specifically, I worked on having my drop just a little above pec height, because I knew that in games, I’d naturally lower it slightly just to be safer.
The next season, my average hang time went up drastically — and that improvement helped me get to the NFL.

To do proper drill work, you’ve got to be honest about where you’re struggling — then build your drills to attack those areas.

From 2017 to 2022, I was doing between 500 and 1,000 drops every single day. I’m not saying you need to do 1,000 a day, but if you’re only doing 50 and thinking that’s enough — it’s not.

Trust me: you won’t regret working harder.

Carry a ball around with you. Get your hands on it as often as possible. Like I tell my players all the time — this isn’t for “some-timers.”

I’m so grateful for my wonderful wife, parents, grand parents, friends, coaches, trainers and so many more. The team that I had around me throughout my 10 years truly helped me in every aspect. I’m so grateful for all you.

Roswell High School… KillaBees.

One of my greatest moments playing football was made there. The place I grew up. So many fun times playing ball from the rec days all the way to my senior year! I’ll forever bleed green and black!

UAB… Ever faithful, ever loyal.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to wear the green and gold and to have created so many cherished memories in Birmingham—a city that has become my home. I will forever appreciate the unwavering support from my UAB family.

BC Lions.. my 2 years in Vancouver helped me develop into a pro and a man. I’m grateful for the opportunity to play in the CFL!

LA Chargers.. So many great memories along with some tough ones, but that’s what makes it a Journey. There’s nothing like putting on that powder blue jersey. I’m forever grateful to be a Captain for such as prestigious team.

I’m excited to move on to the next chapter—coaching full-time. Starting my own kicking company has always been a dream of mine. Ty Long Kicking is my new career. I couldn’t be more excited. Helping the next generation with everything—the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of this game—is something I’ve truly enjoyed.

I’m forever grateful for the wild Journey God put me on in my playing career. The adversity I had to learn to overcome come helped me develop into the man you see today.

Ty Long Kicking….is full go.

Thanks to everyone who supported me as a player—I hope you’ll do the same for me as a coach. by @tyrlong2

There’s more than one way to mold a football, but I believe the handshake grip is the most consistent mold a punter can use.

The goal is to find a mold that helps you get the ball in a good, consistent position. Just like in golf, your grip needs to match your swing.

The more consistently you put the ball in the right spot, the better chance you give yourself to hit good punts.

If you dropped it better, set it quicker, and saw the ball longer, would you be a better punter? Absolutely.

Give the handshake mold a try. It could help you today!

Happy 5th Birthday Harper! You have no idea how much joy and love your mom and I have for you! God put you in my life at a very challenging time. You have taught me so much. I needed you more than you know. I’m excited to see how you influence this world. Your smile lights up every room you walk into. Happy Birthday H! I love you so much. by @tyrlong2

The more consistently you can swing down your target line, the more consistent of a ball striker you’ll become. A repeatable swing path and balanced follow-through help create better contact and more consistent results.

Being able to punt and kick into strong headwinds is a skill. If you’re trying to overpower the wind, nine times out of 10, it’s not going to work.

To punt successfully into the wind, you need to understand three things: trajectory, rotation, and committed lines.

If you’re swinging up into the wind and launching the ball too high, you’re going to lose distance. If you’re not hitting tight spirals, the wind will affect the ball even more.

Your lines matter, too. Taking a line that’s too aggressive or too wide, or walking right just to drop the ball back inside, makes it difficult to stay consistent.

Manage your trajectory. Hit tight spirals. Stay committed to your lines.

Control what you can control and let your technique do the work.

My favorite human, my best best friend. The love of my life. Thank you for an amazing birthday. I love you to the moon and back, always. 😘 I love this life we’ve built and so grateful I get to do it with you! by @tyrlong2

Happy birthday to my favorite human! ❤️

One of the things I admire most about you is your consistency. When I think about the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, there are so many traits that come to mind, but consistency is at the top of that list.

The way you show up every single day for me, Harper, your family, your clients, your patients, and so many other people is something special. You do it all with such positive energy and a heart that genuinely cares for others.

I love getting to spend every single day with you. Thank you for always being by my side through this crazy life of ours. We’ve moved across the world together, been through so many different seasons, and through it all, I’m just grateful I get to do life with you.

I love you so much. Happy birthday to my favorite person. ❤️ by @tyrlong2

Our first TLK Pro Event is in the books!

A few weeks ago, we had 18 guys from all over the country come together with one goal: to keep chasing their dream. I’m proud of how the event came together, and hearing the athletes’ feedback afterward meant a lot to me.

Big thank you to @4thdownu @simonkmathiesen @trackmanfb for helping make it happen. With two TrackMans, we had a dedicated punting field and kicking field, giving every athlete more reps and more opportunities to showcase their ability. We kept the entire event under 3½ hours while making sure everyone got the work they came for.

To the 18 guys who showed up, thank you for trusting me. I know the commitment and sacrifice it takes to travel, prepare, and put yourself out there for another opportunity.

To all my free agents, I’ve been in your shoes. I know what it’s like to keep working while waiting for that next call. That’s why creating opportunities like this means so much to me.

We’re excited to keep building and host more of these in the future. If you’re looking to take your game to the next level, reach out. I’d love to help you chase that next opportunity!

One of the toughest situations for a right-footed punter is being backed up with a right-to-left wind. You have the entire open field ahead of you, and you know it’s time to deliver a big-time punt.

A lot of punters try to force that big ball. Their steps get too long, they lose control, and they end up hitting a bad ball.

In windy conditions, staying smaller and smoother helps you stay under control. That gives you a better chance to hit a consistent ball and get the results you want.

Most of the workouts I see my athletes doing at their schools aren’t built specifically for kickers and punters. They’re built around the needs of linemen, running backs, quarterbacks, and the rest of the team.

That makes sense. As a strength coach, you’re programming for the majority of your athletes.

But as a specialist, you need a plan that supports what YOU do on the field. Getting stronger is part of it. You also need to develop the speed, balance, mobility, and explosiveness to use that strength through the ball.

A lot of my athletes ask me, “What should I be doing to get better?”

I have a plan built specifically for kickers and punters.

DM me “EXPLODE” if you want it!
