In a lecture on how AI is transforming higher education in computing fields, John DeNero addressed students, parents and alums at UC Berkeley Homecoming to share his experiences in designing curriculum and educational support tools.

“Things are going to start out a little bit gloomy because the reality of how AI is being used in education is not all positive at the moment,” said DeNero, teaching professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and faculty director of pedagogy for the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program. “Then I’ll walk you through how I think Berkeley is leading the way in making it a lot better.”

If the world’s government and AI leaders ever agree to pause frontier AI training, is an international pact really feasible?

In a first-of-its-kind academic study, researchers mapped out a path toward an international, mutually verified pause of frontier AI training of at least 10 years.

The plan focuses on halting the production of AI training chips and replacing them over time with specialized “inference-only” chips, which serve fast, efficient inference on existing AI models but are not practically useful for training new models.

Such a plan would permit the continued use of currently available AI products, while preventing new AI models from overwhelming states with social or economic disruption or threats to their national security.

They also suggest verification measures that would allow world leaders to assure nervous rivals that they are upholding the pause agreement.

The multidisciplinary team includes Stuart Russell and Sanjit Seshia, professors in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.

UC Berkeley researchers led by Emma Pierson (EECS) and Ziad Obermeyer (Public Health) have been awarded $1.7 million through Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science. The research grant will support advancements in medical discovery using AI interpretability and agentic AI techniques.

Pierson and Obermeyer’s work aims to establish a general framework for medical discovery by using interpretability and agentic AI techniques to translate complex foundation model representations into human-readable, physiologically grounded concepts across cardiology and oncology, bridging the gap between opaque AI models and actionable insights for clinicians.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate @kailash.satyarthi recently visited the UC Berkeley campus to address students and faculty developing AI technologies, imploring them to center compassion in their work.

“Compassion is a disruptive, dynamic and transformative force,” Satyarthi said at the Sept. 30 event hosted by the UC Berkeley College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) in collaboration with the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion and Arete Youth Academy.

Satyarthi aims to bring the disruptive power of compassion to the dialogue on AI in order to steer the technology away from potential catastrophe and toward the service of humanity.

Joined by Stuart Russell, UC Berkeley professor of computer science; Rose Niousha, UC Berkeley computer science Ph.D. student; and Jennifer Chayes, CDSS dean, Satyarthi and the panel considered how compassion could become central to the development of AI.

“Being able to quantify what impact on a human looks like is probably the first step to making compassion embedded into the system,” said Niousha.

Renewable energy is transforming the grid, but how do we keep it reliable without losing efficiency?

UC Berkeley IEOR & EECS researchers developed a new optimization method that helps address exactly this problem. Their research gives grid operators a sharper way to manage risk as they navigate the unreliable flow of wind and solar power…and it just earned an INFORMS Award for Power Systems Research!
