In 1942, watercolorist Barse Miller painted “Road to Capistrano” at Crystal Cove, a stretch of coastline being reshaped by war.

On assignment for “Life” magazine to document coastal military activity, Miller painted the Japanese American farmland surrounding Crystal Cove after the farmers and their families were forcibly removed to internment camps. The Japanese School and Community Hall (second building from the right) became the US Coast Guard's patrolling headquarters for the rest of World War II and today serves as the Crystal Cove State Park Cultural Center.

Both Tokio Ueyama and Miller won the Cresson Traveling Scholarship at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Ueyama was a fan of Miller's work, having seen Miller's 1940 solo show in Los Angeles, but he was incarcerated at an internment camp in 1942 and missed Miller's major exhibition that year.

Congratulations to our friends at @ucilibraries on the opening of “Crystal Cove and the California Dream” on October 28. Drawing on the Laura Davick Crystal Cove Historical Archive and the Orange County Regional History Collections, the exhibit traces Crystal Cove's history, from Prohibition and Hollywood's Golden Age to World War II and the community effort to save its historic cottages. On view on the UC Irvine campus through March 2027 during regular library hours.

A reproduction of “Road to Capistrano” is included in the Libraries' “Crystal Cove and the California Dream” in Langson Library, and the original is on view now in “Tokio Ueyama: The Hollows Between Mountains” at UC Irvine Langson Museum, now on view through February 28. 2027.

From October 29th to November 5th, the Gateway Study Center will be closed for regular study use as it transforms into an OC Vote Center for the 2026 midterm election.🗳️

Explore over 100 years' worth of stories that predicted dystopian consequences and questioned the boundaries of reality. More and more, we interact via virtual mediums, such as smartphones, the metaverse, and AI chatbots. As media continues to govern our daily lives, we must ask the question, “What is reality?” 🧠 by @ucilibraries

Welcome back, Anteaters! 🐜💙

We hope you enjoyed exploring the Libraries and indulging in some sweet treats. Here’s to a great first week! 📚✨ by @ucilibraries

Two years in the making! 🎶💙

With support from @uci_medhumarts, we were thrilled to welcome members of the @royalphilorchestra and their Strokestra team back to UCI for an incredible week of training, collaboration, and music-making!

Throughout the week, talented students from @ctsa_ucirvine and @ucisymphony trained alongside the @royalphilorchestra team, learning Strokestra’s innovative methods and strategies for using collaborative music-making to support older adults and their healthcare needs. Under the direction of Dr. Tim Steiner from RPO, Dr. Geoffrey Pope, and with the support of clinicians from @ucihealth, the intensive training culminated in two very special days of making music together with our patients. 🎻🥁🎶

Seeing our patients, musicians, students, and healthcare professionals come together through music was truly inspiring—and this is only the beginning.

We are so excited for the next chapter of this partnership with the @royalphilorchestra and look forward to growing Harmonizing Healing at UCI and expanding the ways we can bring music and healthcare together. 💙💛
