**** EVENT VENUE CHANGE: BRAID Conversation with Leonard Peltier **** BRAID's Conversation with Leonard Peltier (event) will now be held at the UCLA School of Law-Room 1347. Our event was previously advertised at the Mathias Botanical Garden, but has since moved to this new UCLA School of Law venue (updated Wed. 10/28). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or confusion. Please see our up-to-date Event flyer and description below for more information: "A Conversation with Leonard Peltier" Saturday, November 14 12:00-3:00 PM UCLA School of Law-Room 1347 RSVP Required: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-conversation-with-leonard-peltier-tickets-2003379576242 Join BRAID for an intimate conversation with Leonard Peltier. Leonard Peltier is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, a lifelong activist, and a member of the American Indian Movement. The longest serving Native American political prisoner in the United States, Leonard Peltier was incarcerated in federal prison for nearly 50 years after a highly controversial conviction. His sentence was commuted on January 20, 2025, resulting from decades of organizing, advocacy, and calls for his freedom. Leonard Peltier remains under home confinement while he continues to pursue a full pardon, and will join the conversation virtually via Zoom due to these ongoing restrictions to his freedom. In conversation with Shannon Rivers, member of the Akimel O’otham Nation, spiritual leader, human rights activist, and advisor to BRAID, Leonard Peltier will reflect on his life, experience of incarceration, and the vital role of books and literature during his time in prison. The conversation will explore how literature and storytelling can sustain connection to culture, language, and advocacy during incarceration. This conversation reflects BRAID’s commitment to nurturing knowledge, identity, and traditions by providing cultural and educational books to Native people who are currently incarcerated across the United States. We are honored to have Leonard Peltier join us in conversation. by @uclaaisc

Enjoy a special Story Time on Sunday, October 25, presented in conjunction with "Paths of Memory, Paths of Healing: Shipibo-Konibo Kené Art." Our guest storyteller, Erick (Ronin) Arias Silvano, will bring to life the histories of mythical beings—from river serpents to forest spirits of Amazonian oral traditions—that move through Shipibo-Konibo cosmology and the wider Amazon. The program will be in both English and Spanish. With Olinda Silvano’s luminous kené murals alongside the ceramics and textiles on view, children and families will have a chance to listen, imagine, and connect ancestral stories to the flowing geometric patterns around them. Kené designs are more than visual art: they are pathways of memory, protection, and healing. This storytelling hour will offer young visitors an accessible and joyful way to step into that world. Join CPSC for Dr. Luis E. Cárcamo-Huechante’s “Acoustic Colonialism: From the Settler Ear to Indigenous Interference” book talk this Thurs. (10/8)! Event co-sponsored by the UCLA Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the UCLA American Indian Studies Center. This talk will offer an author’s view on the key theoretical, methodological and historical concepts that form part of his book Acoustic Colonialism: Acts of Mapuche Interference (Duke UP, 2025). Theorizations regarding what the author calls “acoustic colonialism,” “the colonial ear” and “Indigenous interference” reverberate throughout his book, including the Mapuche notion of allkütun (attentive listening). Cárcamo-Huechante elaborates on these concepts in the context of Ngulu Mapu––or what is today known as central and southern “Chile,” part of the broader Mapuche territory (Wallmapu). ⏱️ Thurs. 10/8, 12:15pm 📌 Haines 352 🍽️ LUNCH PROVIDED by @uclaaisc
