The interlocking “UD” is more than a drill formation. It’s a tradition that has been part of the Pride of Delaware for generations. When the University of Delaware Marching Band first began, it had just 35 members. As Gene Carlisle, AS61, recalls, the band was too small to form the University logo all at once. Instead, members would form a “U” on the field before shifting positions to create the “D.” When Heidi Sarver and Jim Ancona took over the Fightin’ Blue Hen Marching Band in 1995, they quickly grew the program from approximately 100 to 300 members. With that growth came a new look for the interlocking “UD,” eventually becoming the formation we recognize on the field today, with marchers standing two to three deep. As we celebrate 80 years of the UDMB, we invite our Fightin’ Blue Hen Marching Band alumni to return to the field on Saturday, November 14, for Alumni Band! Reconnect with your band family, relive the traditions that bring us together, and help us celebrate 80 years of the Pride of Delaware! by @udmbofficial
