Welcome to the official page of the UGA Geology Department! 🏔️⛏️✨

Geologists often rely on all their senses to identify rocks! Now you know how to tell the difference between sandstones (can feel with your hands), siltstones (can feel with your teeth), and claystones (cannot feel with your teeth) 🤯😎

$We love showing off our department’s collections and resources, so here are some common misconceptions in need of correcting 😎👍 Read below if you’re curious what some of the more niche geology topics mean… 🩻 XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) machines do not take x-rays of the human body, however, they can use x-rays to figure out the composition of a rock sample! The wavelengths of these rays are similar to the spacing between the atoms in a crystal, so if the rays get bent (or ✨diffracted✨), we can learn something about the structure! 🌊 Surfaces of forced regression are divisions between rock layers that record relative falls in sea level. They appear as sharp contacts separating underlying deeper-water rocks (like shales) from overlying shallower-water rocks (like sandstones) 🏖️ 💎 Every mineral can be classified as either uniaxial or biaxial, which just has to do with how light behaves as it passes through the crystalline structure. The 2V angle is one of the many features we can see in a fancy microscope to help identify an unknown mineral! 🔬 #geology #universityofgeorgia #uga #geodawgs #godawgs #thegeorgiaway #dawgnation #ugageology #earthscience #earthhistory #fossils #minerals by @ugageology$

We’re excited to invite you to The First U.S. Radiometric Symposium in Four Decades: Revitalizing Radiometric Geophysics for U.S. Mineral Mapping. This event will be jointly organized by the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) and the University of Georgia (UGA), will bring together experts from academia, government, and industry to revitalize the use of radiometric geophysics for mineral mapping and exploration in the United States 🤩

📢 Registration closes November 4th!

The symposium will be held Friday, November 13, 2026 on the UGA campus. Please visit our website (link in bio!) or email hailey.bos@uga.edu for more information and how to register. We’re excited to see you there!

On October 17th, Dr. Garing and students from her lab took a trip to Tumbling Rock Cave preserve in Alabama!

Tumbling Rock is a karst cave system in Northeastern Alabama! Caves like these are created when acidic groundwater percolates through limestone, leaving the cave behind! 😎😎

When mineral-heavy water drips into a cave, it releases any CO₂ gas it picked up, causing the dissolved minerals to precipitate (harden) into solid rock over hundreds of years.
Stalactites grow down from the ceiling (holding TIGHT to the top), while stalagmites build up from the ground (where they MIGHT reach the roof)! 🧗🧗

Musicians wanted to include fossils in their album. @UGAGeology had the guy for the job.

Atlanta metal band Mastodon teamed up with Franklin College’s geology department to bring a prehistoric twist to their new LP — using real fossilized mastodon teeth to create a special edition of its album Marrow Deep. Completed by Professor Paul Schroeder, all of the lab work was done right on campus.

Swipe to see how UGA science made some serious noise 🦣🎸🖤 by @ugageology

No but seriously… we all know one of these two people… 👀

Come see us for the final Exhibit Hall session until 2:00 @geosociety !!!

We have loved meeting so many faces and can’t wait for next year!!

Recognize any of these???? Drop them in the comments! If you do, here’s a cookie 🍪

The UGA Geology Department has a wide collection of thousands of minerals from all over the world! From Oxides, to carbonates, silicates, to molybdenates and tungstates, and many many more, we are the proud home for all of these specimens!🪨

Next time you’re on the UGA campus or around the building, come check out our mineral collection on the third floor!
