Today, we acknowledge and appreciate the humanitarian decision taken by the United Naga Council (UNC) in facilitating the release of the 14 Kuki-Zo innocent civilians who had been held captive nearly for a month.The safe return of innocent Kuki-Zo civilians to their families is a moment of relief, hope, and humanity. During the MNF uprising of March 1966, the Lushai Hills(Mizoram) witnessed one of the most significant events in Mizoram’s history.⛰️As MNF fighters launched coordinated attacks across the region, the Government of India responded with military operations to regain control. ⚔️The Indian Air Force was deployed in support of these operations, marking one of the rare occasions in independent India when fighter aircraft were used over its own territory against areas inhabited by its own citizens.✈️Dassault Ouragan (Toofani) fighter-bombers of No. 29 Squadron and Hawker Hunter fighter aircraft participated in missions over the Lushai Hills. 🛩️The Toofani was armed with bombs, rockets, and four 20 mm cannons, while the Hunter provided fighter support, reconnaissance, and ground-attack capability. 🎯In March 1966, Aizawl came under air attack, causing civilian deaths, injuries, and displacement. The event remained largely undisclosed for years, becoming one of the most overlooked chapters in Mizoram’s history. 🌫️Following the first attacks, aircraft carried out additional sorties over Aizawl and the surrounding hills as military operations continued across the region💥Government forces eventually regained control of major towns and installations, but the insurgency continued for many years. 🚩The conflict finally came to an end with the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord on 30 June 1986 between the Government of India and the MNF. 🤝On 20 February 1987, Mizoram became the 23rd state of India. 🏛️The 1966 Bombing of Aizawl remains one of the most overlooked chapters in Mizoram’s history.
