On June 19, 1865, news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom, even when declared, has not always been immediate or equal.

"My time here left an enduring mark on my life.” ❤️

Donna Moore never forgot what her time at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette — then the University of Southwestern Louisiana — has given to her. From introductions to great food to experiencing the beauty of campus and developing cherished memories, her years as a student left a meaningful impression.

Now, she is paying it forward.

Through a charitable bequest, Donna is establishing funds to support academic programs and student-life initiatives at UL Lafayette. Her gift will provide emergency relief and financial assistance to students involved in organizations that foster a welcoming and inclusive campus environment, as well as scholarships for students pursuing degrees in psychology or gender studies.

Donna’s gift channels her passions into a tangible legacy of empowerment and inclusion that will create meaningful impacts for students for years to come.

The Vitrella Study Abroad Scholarship awards one College of Liberal Arts student $1,000 to support a summer study abroad experience. Michael, a senior majoring in history and anthropology, will spend his summer in Sligo, Ireland participating in an archaeological field school, where he will help excavate the historic Green Fort and gain hands-on research experience in medieval material culture.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmothers, caregivers and mother figures who encourage, support and inspire every step of the journey. This year’s Spring Commencement includes one especially meaningful story: Sonya Weaver and her daughter, Kylie, will cross the stage together to earn their degrees from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

From synchronized class schedules and carpool rides to late-night studying and supporting each other through life’s challenges, their journey has been one of perseverance, growth and love. What began as a mother encouraging her daughter became a shared experience that brought them even closer together.

On May 15, Sonya won’t be cheering from the seats as Kylie graduates. She’ll be right behind her in line.

We’re proud to celebrate all of our graduates this commencement season — and especially the moms who prove it’s never too late to chase a dream. ❤️

Dr. Michael Martin Shea's translation of Liliana Ponce's 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 is this year's winner of the PEN America Award for Poetry in Translation.

The judges say, "Shea’s translation deftly captures the essence of Ponce’s serial poems on creation and absence, offering them with an apt, skillful contradiction that melds appropriate ambiguity and admirable precision."
