Cloud, cancer tissue, computer-generated image, or a galaxy? 🤔 Guess before you swipe! ➡️

Earlier this month we zoomed in on how cancer cells move. Now we’re zooming way out. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month wraps up, we’re spotlighting research that finds the same patterns in breast tissue, clouds, and the Milky Way. Scientists call this scale-invariance, and Dr. Andre Khalil's CompuMAINE lab is using it to look at breast tissue in new ways. 🩷

Let us know in the comments if you were right! 👇

Have you ever wondered how cancer spreads? Dr. Karissa Tilbury's bioengineering lab here at MCEC is watching it happen 👀 In this image, breast cancer cells (blue) are breaking away from the tumor-like cluster and migrating towards the surrounding collegen (green). Watching and understanding these patterns can help researchers understand how cancer invades healthy tissue.

More from the same Maine tree. 🌲

UMaine researchers produced 2.5× more useful chemical building blocks while using 8–20× less acid. That could mean a more efficient path from forest leftovers to fuels and products.

Swipe to see how.

When you’re done with your lobstah suppah, what happens to the rest? 🦞🤔

Researchers at UMaine are trying to answer that question in an unpredictable way: it becomes a golf tee.

Their proprietary composite material can be synthesized with all sorts of organic waste. Researchers hope to use it to replace all sorts of single-use plastics, and even function as a construction material!

This is what we call a hole-in-one for Maine’s blue economy. 🦞⛳️

UMaine researchers are turning discarded lobster shells into biodegradable golf tees that are strong enough to perform, break down in about 30 days, and return natural nutrients to the soil.

Led by the Neivandt Group, this work shows how materials innovation can create new value from one of Maine’s signature industries while reducing waste and advancing more sustainable manufacturing.

Today, the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center launched 3Dirigo X, a 30-foot vessel showcasing the potential of large-scale additive manufacturing for maritime applications.

Designed and manufactured at ASCC, 3Dirigo X builds on years of research and development in advanced materials and manufacturing and demonstrates new possibilities for how vessels can be designed and built.

Welcome MCEC class of 2030!! by @umaine.mcec

Maine homes deserve better than “just throw on another sweatshirt.” 🏠

UMaine’s Building Science Program gives students like chemical engineering senior Brian Waterbury the chance to work on real solutions early, from research and testing to quality control at Maine companies like TimberHP.

Because better homes take more than good intentions. They take engineers who know how to make them more energy efficient, durable and affordable. #linkinbio for the full story

POV: Your project has a hull, propellers and a mind of its own.

UMaine mechanical engineering students designed, manufactured and tested systems for an autonomous RoboBoat while gaining direct experience with industry professionals.

Thank you to UMaine alumnus Dr. Jacob Ward for sponsoring these capstone experiences.
Real projects. Real industry. Real engineering. #linkinbio for the full story!

Engineering and computing are not solo sports.

So we didn't start orientation with a lecture.
We started with a challenge.

Because the future belongs to people who can build, collaborate, communicate, and solve problems together.

Welcome to the Maine College of Engineering & Computing, Class of 2030. Let's build something incredible. ⚙️💻🐻
