Dr Julian Mamo at the 53rd World Groundwater Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists delivered his talk: Valley dams as in-channel MAR in Mediterranean intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams: monitoring recession and recharge in Malta

Small dams are used in dry valleys in Malta and around the Mediterranean to harvest rainwater runoff for agricultural use and to recharge our groundwater. In collaboration with The Energy and Water Agency, Dr Mamo is working on a monitoring programme to understand how fast these damns fill and how quickly they recharge the groundwater under different geological conditions. by @umearthsystems

Did you see us at the Maker Faire at Esplora?
Ms Julia Borg and Dr Julian Mamo represented the Institute of Earth Systems at the very first edition of this festival of invention, innovation, and curiosity in Malta.
They engaged with visitors, showing them how to give new life to old clothes and explaining how Malta's groundwater resources are managed.
Thanks to everyone who joined this celebration of creativity! by @umearthsystems

Introduction to Aeropalynology, Atmospheric Monitoring of Pollen Grains & Fungal Spores

This workshop for the students of the Institute of Earth Systems was held by Dr Estefanía Sánchez Reyes, Associate Professor at the University of Salamanca, and Dr Belinda Gambin, Senior Lecturer at the IES, with assistance of PhD student Ms Alexa Paredes Idiáquez. The workshop covered gravimetric and volumetric capture methods, provided practical experience with drum loading and collection, slide preparation for microscopy, the interpretation of results, and gave an overview of applications including implications for allergies and airborne diseases. We are grateful to Dr Sánchez Reyes for sharing her expertise with our students. by @umearthsystems

When butterflies arrive, everyone notices. 🦋

As some of nature's most charismatic species, their recent passage over Malta is not just a beautiful spectacle, but also a reminder of the remarkable journeys happening above us and the importance of protecting the habitats that make them possible.

Beautiful to watch. Important to protect.
