What can satellites, drones, and sensors tell us about our changing planet? 🛰️

Hannah Heath, an M.P.S. student in the Applied Remote Sensing track, shares how remote sensing turns large-scale data into information that can help address real-world challenges.

Through her internship with the CHIRRP initiative, she is working to map chronic heat across Miami and identify where communities may be most vulnerable to heat exposure.

She also shares what makes the Rosenstiel School experience stand out: hands-on technical training, opportunities to work across disciplines, and a collaborative community that encourages students to explore beyond their own field. taken in Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science by @miamirosenstiel

MPS student Megan Pike is turning her passion for coral restoration into hands-on research.

As a second-year student in the Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management track, Megan works in Lirman’s Benthic Ecology and Coral Restoration Lab, studying how genotype and nursery origin influence staghorn coral growth, survivorship, and bleaching susceptibility.

Megan’s work helps advance restoration efforts for ecosystems that protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and sustain marine life. taken in Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science by @miamirosenstiel

// Clear conditions, hands-on learning, and coral restoration in action 🙌

MPS students in MBE 644: Tropical Coastal Restoration, led by Professor Maddie Kaufman, joined @rescueareef for a field-based dive focused on coral nursery work and restoration techniques.

Throughout the expedition, students moved beyond the classroom to actively participate in the restoration process. From fragmenting coral colonies into smaller pieces for outplanting, to measuring total linear extension (TLE), and planting both boulder and branching corals, each step contributed to rebuilding reef structure and resilience.

The course blends science, strategy, and real-world application, giving students direct experience with the methods used to restore tropical coastal ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses.

As global disaster losses continue to rise, professionals trained to combine earth science, data analysis, and risk modeling are more important than ever. Former U.S. Coast Guard member Douglas Flessner came to the Rosenstiel School to better understand the science behind natural disasters and risk.

Through the Master of Professional Science Natural Hazards & Catastrophes track, he studied geohazards and gained hands-on experience applying catastrophe models used across the insurance industry.

Now working at Guy Carpenter, Flessner helps clients assess and manage disaster risk, applying this skillset to real-world challenges. taken in Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science by @miamirosenstiel
