My Grannie, July 2026

Photos were made on a Horseman 45fa with 4x5 @kodak Ektar film by @unbelievaboyle

[WORK IN PROGRESS] I'm starting the edits on a short experimental film provisionally titled "Seventeen Fishes" where I'll combine an interview with my Grannie and Super 8 footage from a fishing trip at Moose Lake to explore themes of colonial exploitation of the land and climate change.

On Aug. 24, 2001, Air Transat Flight 236 ran out of fuel over the Atlantic Ocean on its way from Toronto to Lisbon. At the controls was Robert Piché, a 48-year-old Quebecker with a cool temperament and a past he was desperate to keep secret.

Driven by adrenalin and an instinct to survive, Mr. Piché steered the powerless A330 airliner for 19 minutes to the nearest piece of land. The plane touched down at the Lajes military air base on the island of Terceira, in the Azores, roughly 1,400 kilometres west of Portugal.

All 293 passengers and 13 crew members survived, and Mr. Piché was hailed as a hero. To this day, it’s still the longest glide by a passenger jet.

SEVENTEEN FISHES

I’m in Alberta working on a few creative projects across a range of mediums. First, I'll be working on a short experimental film provisionally titled "Seventeen Fishes" where I'll use an interview with my Grannie and Super 8 footage from a fishing trip at Moose Lake. This film will explore themes of colonial exploitation of the land and climate change. Next I'll be attending a one-week residency at Buttermaker House where I'll continue work on my family archives project "Lefse and Love" where I use the technique of photo embroidery to explore the themes of migration, estrangement, and identity. Finally I'll be spending three days in the badlands documenting the landscape with a 4x5 camera.

Three minutes of Super 8 footage costs $130 to document, develop, & scan. A single 4x5 image costs $27. A one-week residency costs $775. If you're inspired by these projects, please consider supporting my work. Comment BMC for the link.

I'm so ready for another summer of creativity 🌞 Let's make portraits in the woods, cyanotypes on the beach, embroideries in a hammock. Who's in?

Continuing to slowly work on my embroidery projects for my family archives project "Lefse & Love" 🪡 In an archive of mostly posed portraits, this photo of my Great-Grandpa Algot asleep in his chair is a rare candid moment. by @unbelievaboyle

I bought a thing 🫣 Introducing my new medium format powerhouse - the Mamiya 6. I'm absolutely thrilled with this camera - the ways it makes photos is beautiful & technical, while also light & agile. Also stoked that I managed to get all three lenses! #shootfilmstaybroke

Huge thanks to all the pals who shared their technical expertise & patiently listened to me hem and haw about this purchase for literal years - @_morris_lum_ @fsibold @ellasharpmorton 💜

Emulsion lifts is an experimental photo process involving making a polaroid image, and then literally lifting the image away from its typical frame and onto a new surface. What I love about this process is that it takes my brain one step removed from the literal and into a dreamy space. At $5 per frame, it can feel hard to truly let go and play with this process. This winter I have the incredible opportunity to spend several months experimenting with Montreal artist @anna.j.photo thanks to a Professional Development Grant from the @canada.council. Here are some things we’re curious about:
- How do lifts work with different types of film? Polaroid 600 vs SX-70? Colour vs black & white?
- How do liquids change the process? Warm water vs apple cider vinegar vs lemon juice?
- How can you do lifts onto different surfaces? Bricks vs glass vs ceramics vs wood vs shells vs fiberglass?

I’m taking a winter socials break December 24 to January 5. Text / email / call / doorbell ring to get at me ✌️

One day while shopping for groceries, Johanne Hébert realised that leaning on the grocery cart while walking greatly reduced her pain. After being awarded a settlement for thalidomide survivors, her brother designed a custom walker that supports her weight while walking. This mobility aid greatly reduces her pain, improving her quality of life and allowing her to lead a more active life outside her home.

10 years after being awarded compensation from the Canadian government, the Globe and Mail features thalidomide survivors to examine how their lives have changed.

“The support program allowed survivors to claim an essential ingredient of dignity.”

“A good life, the survivors say, requires more than resolving the practical business of living. It needs joy and creativity and adventure, and time with the people you love.”

I feel honoured to have been asked to contribute photos and videos to this beautiful & sensitive story. Thanks to Johanne Hebert, Alie Vachon, and Mercedes Benegbi for welcoming me into your homes and allowing me to document a slice of your life. Great writing by Erin Anderssen. A big thanks to photo editor @photo_editor_clare for trusting me with this assignment! Excited to have collaborated with photographers across Canada for this story. by @unbelievaboyle
