This statue is a memorial to the 38 men and boys who died in the Montagu Pit disaster on 30th March 1925. The tragedy occurred one hundred years ago when an inrush of water from the abandoned Paradise Pit flooded the workings of the Montagu View Pit.

Some of the bodies were not recovered for many months, with wives and mothers only being able to identify their loved ones by buttons or sewn patches. The village of Scotswood was devastated by the loss of 22 of its residents. Thirteen pit ponies also perished in the disaster.

The memorial called 'Yesterday, Today, Forever' was erected in 2012 and displays life-sized metal figures of a pitman leading a pit pony ridden by two children. The statue is made from steel and stone, and was commissioned by Scotswood Village Residents Association. It was created by Xceptional Designs with the support of local schools and the wider community.
