"GOD SAVE THE KING" - But which king 🤴

What a fascinating find, and one i really welcomed!

The phrase became strongly associated with the British monarchy during the 18th century, particularly after its appearance in print in 1745. Examples of small metal clasps carrying the same patriotic wording are known from the late 18th century, including examples attributed to the reign of George III (1760–1820).
So, although I wouldn't claim an exact date yet, my thoughts would be late 18th to early 19th century.

What's particularly fascinating is that this isn't just decoration. Small objects like this give us a glimpse into everyday life and attitudes of the period. “God Save the King” was a very recognisable expression of loyalty to the Crown, and it appeared on all sorts of objects, from tokens and seals to ceramics and metal fittings.

There are even documented 18th-century clasps bearing the exact wording “GOD SAVE THE KING”, making the possibility that this is some form of Georgian clasp or fastening especially intriguing.
The big question is what did it actually belong to? A book? Clothing? A belt or strap? Something else entirely?

For now, I'm calling it a probable late-Georgian patriotic clasp/fastening, possibly dating to the reign of George III.

A tiny piece of metal, but potentially 200+ years old and carrying a little piece of Georgian history. That's what makes finds like this so fascinating.

What do you think it was originally used for?

This Blew My Ears Off!!!....

If you have ever found one you'll know the Unforgettable sound of a cartwheel penny.

An iconic piece of British coinage history!

Introduced in 1797 during the reign of George III, the famous Cartwheel penny was Britain's first officially minted copper penny, produced by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint in Birmingham.

Weighing a hefty 1 ounce of copper, its impressive size and raised rim gave it the nickname Cartwheel.

A fascinating piece of Georgian history, thats was short lived.

I've recently been adding to my ever growing antique collection of mahogany draws and the recently acquired antique engineers tools chest which I believe is oak. These beautifully hand made pieces are a joy to to look over and appreciate the workmanship.

A light clean and a rub down of bees wax to give these beautiful cabinets a lovely subtle finish bringing them back to their glory.

Do you like these?

Feel free to post your cabinets or where you store your finds im excited to see what you guys have.

Not the most glorious of finds, but a small piece of history saved on a beautiful sunny but cold morning.

A lovely little humble king Edward half penny.

What do you think?

Seems to have age and a purpose, and my first thoughts were a possible iron age toggle design 🤔

All Hail The Queen! 👑 Elizabeth I.

Behind the golden age of Elizabethan England lay a life filled with danger, betrayal, and uncertainty.

Born in 1533, Elizabeth’s early life was far from secure. Her mother, Anne Boleyn, was executed when Elizabeth was just two years old, and she was declared illegitimate during the political and religious turmoil of her father Henry VIII’s reign.

When Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1558, she inherited a kingdom divided by religion and facing powerful enemies abroad. As a Protestant queen in a deeply divided Europe, her position was constantly challenged.

In 1554, during the reign of her half-sister Mary I, Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower of London on suspicion of involvement in Wyatt’s Rebellion. Although she was eventually released, the experience must have made the dangers of royal politics painfully clear.

Throughout her reign, Elizabeth faced enormous pressure to marry and produce an heir. Yet she never married, earning the enduring title of the Virgin Queen. Her decision was both personal and political, allowing her to preserve her independence while using marriage negotiations as a diplomatic tool.

Elizabeth faced repeated conspiracies, including plots associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, who represented a potential alternative claimant to the English throne. Mary was eventually executed in 1587, a decision that carried enormous political and personal consequences.

In 1588, England faced the threat of invasion by Philip II of Spain. The defeat of the Spanish Armada became one of the defining moments of Elizabeth’s reign, strengthening her reputation as a formidable monarch.

The coinage of Elizabeth I comes from an age when the Crown’s authority, religious conflict, international rivalry, and economic stability were all closely intertwined. Her reign also included a major recoinage in 1560–1561 to address the problem of debased currency.

A coin from Elizabeth I’s reign is therefore more than a piece of silver or gold. It is a tangible link to a queen who survived political danger, navigated religious division, and ruled for 44 years.
