Celebrating the transformative power of adornment 🌟
Fluid ribbons of molten metal to unfurl your most expansive, radiant self 🔥
Seattle, WA

POSTS STORIES REELS

Hello! I’ve been deep in introspection mode lately after some transformative experiences and deep reflection before my 59th birthday this week (wowza). Thought I would pop on and say hi and give a little info about myself and my work 😊

I’m Laurie, the artist and designer behind Unfurl Studio. My creative journey has been anything but linear. I studied sculpture and fiber at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, spent years designing and making the fanciest silk lingerie for my own label, pivoted to corporate marketing after a profound loss, and eventually found my way back to making things with my hands again.

I create sculptural jewelry inspired by the fluid movement of ribbon. I bring the same design sensibilities from my luxury lingerie career to my jewelry practice: sensual surfaces, glamorous shine, playful movement, and the power of adornment to embody our most radiant selves.

It is my passion to elevate women. Nothing brings me more joy than to create something beautiful that absolutely lights up her up from within. It’s the why that drives me to make art and build a business that connects me with other women, even when starting at this later chapter in my life is seen as highly ambitious (and daunting).

If you’ve been here for a while, thank you for following my journey. If you’re new, welcome! I’m so delighted you are here ❤️ by @unfurl_studio

$I just got back from two weeks in France and of course we had to spend the first few days in Paris, city of love and light. It was a feast of art and beauty, and here are only a few highlights of what had my heart swooning. I was thrilled to see some incredible Lalique jewelry masterpieces at @museeorsay (that poppy was as large as the span of my hand!). They have an entire wing dedicated to art nouveau filled with decorative arts and complete recreated interiors. Other highlights were the stained glass domed ceiling at @galerieslafayette (sadly their lingerie department is a fraction of what it was when I was there last 10 years ago), this incredible gilded screen at @lanvin and this couture embroidery sample at @madparis Which is your favorite image? Should I share more photos of my trip on Stories? by @unfurl_studio$

A little love today for a whole lotta ring… The Rush sculptural ring sweeps boldly along the top of the hand. Like a cresting wave or a lick of flame, it is definitely for the woman who refuses to be contained. How fabulous does it look paired with a brutalist style, too?! by @unfurl_studio

What if a ring didn’t stop at the finger?

The Rush ring was designed to use the hand as part of its composition. A fluid ribbon rises from the finger and sweeps boldly across the hand, changing as you move and revealing a different silhouette from every angle.

It is jewelry conceived as sculpture, but made to live on the body.

Which would you choose: bronze or silver? by @unfurl_studio

The waxes have left the studio 🙌

After an intensive stretch of working in wax, I dropped off the newest forms to be cast in bronze. Wax is where I begin to capture a sense of fluid ribbons in motion.

Casting transforms that gesture into metal, but what comes back is only the beginning. The raw bronze will be rough. From there, I’ll spend days sanding, refining and sculpting the metal by hand until the final form is revealed.

For now, the work is somewhere between wax and metal. I can’t wait to get my hands on it again!

Returning to my roots.

Before jewelry, I spent years designing and making luxury lingerie, working with silk, lace and ribbon, and learning how fabric folds, drapes and moves around the body.

As I explore this new body of work, I keep finding myself drawn back to that tactile language. Today’s experiments: folded ribbons, sketches and the beginnings of ideas for bringing softness and luminous color into conversation with sculptural metal.

I don’t know exactly where it’s going yet. That’s the exciting part. by @unfurl_studio

My favorite way to sculpt with wax is to use a hot tool to melt it as I carve out a gestural shape. It lets me play with finding the balance of intentionality and spontaneity. And it lends itself to creating fluid forms that have a sense of movement.

Let me know if you have any questions on my sculpting process! Or if there’s anything you’d love to see in the next reel. I’m going to try to be better about filming behind the scenes as I build a new body of work 😂 by @unfurl_studio

One sculptural shape. Three ways to express yourself.

A single link for a little Spark.
Two for more movement.
Three for when you’re ready to bring the drama.

I love how the same fluid form takes on an entirely different energy as it multiplies. Each one moves with the wearer, catches the light, and makes its own kind of statement.

Which is your favorite? I’d love to know ❤️ by @unfurl_studio

I’m about to begin my second collection. Can I admit something? I’m not entirely sure what I’m made of as a designer.

Creating a first collection was about asking, Can I do this? Creating my second feels different. It’s asking, Who am I as an artist?

That’s both exhilarating… and a little terrifying.

I wrote a reflection about standing at the edge of this next chapter and the unexpected inspiration that’s leading me forward.

I’d love to have you along for the journey.
