POSTS STORIES REELS

FINALLY! We’ve put up on our website the work from our 25/26 brief #AccessToTools featuring our talented @unit11bartlett students. Lots to see including the work of this talented pair, @samfield_ and @parin.nawa , the respective winners of the Yr4 and Yr5 medal at the Bartlett last year. #unit11bartlett #architecture #architecturestudent #bartlett @bartlettarchucl by @unit11bartlett

We’re looking forward to a new year of fabulous Unit 11 students, and to taking LIMIT STATE out to the Mediterranean edge of Marseille and the French Riviera. Our field trip will bring us among wetlands, ports, firebreaks, industrial landscapes (including the ITER nuclear Fusion project), and the settlements that live alongside them.

Term 1, Strange Acts of Observation, asks how we see and understand places shaped by environmental change. Term 2, For Worlds Already in Progress, turns towards repair as a source of architectural invention.

Paul Virilio’s “original accident” reminds us that every technology brings the possibility of its own failure. Rob Holmes’s ‘The Problem with Solutions’ (from @places_journal)gives us another useful prompt: how can design respond to troubled landscapes without assuming that one neat fix will settle everything? Finally, a strong nod towards Ballard’s SuperCannes. We’ll investigate through fieldwork, drawings, models and architectural proposals. Expect curious observations, serious questions and plenty of architecture! @unit11bartlett @bartlettarchucl

'Eleven 2026' - Presenting a collection of student work and research.

'Across the unit, students approached architecture as an active way of engaging with existing conditions, as well as those of near or speculative futures. Materials and craft are treated as transformative tools and architecture as a methodological practice, providing the means for interpretation and transformation. Projects span from landscape repair, buildings constructed from agricultural waste and environmental architectures that monitor air or capture atmospheres. Others reimagine civic space as sites of performance and governance or propose productive and research landscapes that phase across timeframes, adapting to climatic shifts. With the ethos of the Whole Earth Catalog in mind, architecture is understood as an assemblage of relationships, practices, and environments.'

Ana-Maria Cazan - Ecologies of Repair

Y5 | 2025-2026

Exploring how architecture might shift from the production of objects towards the
cultivation of conditions for ecological recovery, the project proposes an Environmental Life-Support System for the long-term regeneration of post-industrial landscapes. Set within the former ThyssenKrupp steelworks in Turin, Italy, it responds to contaminated soils, fragmented habitats, and abandoned infrastructures through a series of devices that support phytoremediation, water filtration, habitat creation, cultivation, monitoring, and environmental stewardship.

These speculative instruments are subsequently translated into the Landscape Care Laboratory, an architectural framework that brings together research, cultivation, monitoring, education, and field operations. Rather than prescribing a fixed end-state, the project understands restoration as an ongoing temporal process, positioning architecture as a facilitator of care, adaptation, and long-term ecological recovery.

Jess Ho - 'The Serafini Convivium'

Y5 | 2025-2026

@jess.hxw

In the heart of Northern Italy’s Po River, Isola Serafini serves as a critical testbed for reinhabiting rural Po Valley through ecological repair and cultivating local gastronomic identity, exploring reinvented legacies of the post-industrial agricultural commons. Besieged by rural depopulation and biotope erosion from industrial monocultures, the territory increasingly oscillates between catastrophic flooding and drought.

The Serafini Convivium speculates a prefigurative rural revival enacted through food—the medium that historically drove reductive land homogenisation—envisioning a nascent neo-peasantry commons as a layered site of collective identity and shared interests.

Functioning as a decentralised exchange for gastronomy and permaculture, the Convivium’s spatial logic mimics the synergies of a layered forest garden, terracing production in tiers of growing levels, integrating embedded commensality and workshop spaces. By reconstituting gastronomic processes within a convivial framework, the architecture establishes a nuanced site where ecological complexity and sustenance are intrinsically bound.

Nicole Zhao - 'Assemblage for Piazza Crispi'

Y5 | 2025-2026

@nicz_archi

The recent de-industrialisation of Turin has become intertwined with the dissolution of a shared working class identity, particularly within post-industrial areas like Barriera di Milano, resulting in a perceived destruction of community. However, the aspiration towards ‘community’ as an ideal is misleading, especially when applied to heterogeneous migrant neighbourhoods like Barriera di Milano. A closer look at Barriera di Milano presents an alternative spatial logic, such that spaces are denoted by an ad-hoc practice of urban provisions. Through applying assemblage thinking to these individual provisions, they form a subversive system of architecture that prioritises practices of inhabitation over the bare shelter that contains them. The project proposes an ‘assemblage’ community centre located on Piazza Crispi that aims to hold varied activities together, providing much needed public space without imposing a common identity on the neighbourhood.

Charlotte Henrich - '22nd Century Post-glacial Landscapes'

Y5 | 2025-2026

@charlytecture

This project investigates the role of glaciers in human survival as climate change reshapes future liveable landscapes. Focusing on Italy’s Miage Glacier, the longest debris-covered glacier in the Mont Blanc Massif, it develops a speculative scenario based on predictions of rapid glacial retreat. With only 3–4% of the glacier expected to remain by 2100 and downstream impacts affecting millions across Europe, the project explores emerging eco-precarial conditions. A climate-driven test station is proposed within the post-glacial moraine landscape, responding to models of glacier loss and its effects on life in the Aosta Valley. Designed to “move with nature,” the station ascends with shifting tree and snow lines, while supporting ablation control, water management, ecological restoration, and the protection of Alpine communities and culture in the valley below.

Kacper Sehnke - Residual Territories: A Field Observatory for Climatic Registration

Y5 | 2025-2026

Set within the post-industrial river corridor of the Stura di Lanzo, the project develops six inhabitable research stations for registering the environmental pressures of the Po Valley. The site is an alluvial gravel island on the northern edge of Turin, caught between river infrastructure, landfill territories, material depots and floodprone ground. Each station acts as a field instrument, registering a specific condition: flotsam, hydraulic flow, atmospheric water, air pollution, heat and sediment. Raised above the flood datum on buoyant steel rig structures, the stations combine temporary occupation, monitoring, maintenance and material handling with external apparatus that captures, delays, releases, dries and registers environmental material over time.
The Smithsons’ Climate Register provides the conceptual model for treating architecture as a record of exposure, weathering, ageing and environmental trace. Through this lens, the scheme makes unstable conditions visible through mechanical choreography, material accumulation and the slow registration of change over time. by @unit11bartlett

Elise Wehowski - Hijacking the Hill: constructing with atmosphere

Y5 | 2025-2026

Archisource Drawing of the Year Nomination
https://archisource.org/drawingoftheyear2026/visit

Hijacking the Hill proposes a cross-generational care hub on Monte dei Cappuccini in Turin, transforming a steep hillside into a shared civic landscape. Responding to the city’s social and spatial inequalities, the project offers a first point of contact for people seeking support or connection, combining counselling, sexual health services and emergency housing with public programmes such as a kitchen, atelier, workshop and music spaces. The design is informed by Situationist ideas of dérive, détournement and constructed situations. Rather than imposing a fixed institution, it hijacks the hill through lightweight platforms, bridges, vegetated steps and terraces that sit among existing trees and topography. Circulation becomes non-linear and exploratory, encouraging drifting, pausing and informal occupation. As the building moves down the slope, the programme shifts from protected spaces at the top to porous, collective and event-based spaces below. The project proposes care not only as a service, but as an atmospheric and spatial condition: a framework for mutual support. by @unit11bartlett

Sophia Adderley - AirStories: Invisible Atmospheres and the Politics of Air

Y5 | 2025-2026

Airstories: Invisible Atmospheres and the Politics of Air investigates the relationship
between atmospheric pollution, civic accountability and environmental governance in Turin. Situated within the Po Valley, one of Europe’s most polluted regions, the project responds to the challenge of governing an environmental condition that is largely invisible and temporally diffuse.
Using the Turin Smog Trial as its point of departure, the project explores the tension
between atmospheric harm and the evidence required to govern it. Whilst pollution operates through invisibility and delay, legal systems rely upon visibility and proof. The project therefore asks how new forms of governance might emerge in response to atmospheric harm.
The proposal consequently takes the form of an Environmental Governance Hub. At its centre, a marble wall acts as an atmospheric register, analysing, recording and exhibiting pollutants over time, transforming invisible environmental conditions into an archive of public evidence. Part legal infrastructure, environmental instrument and civic theatre, Airstories makes the invisible visible, forming a stage upon which pollution becomes both actor and evidence. by @unit11bartlett

Camille De Waele - Crafting Resistance: Turin’s Campus for Craft

Y5 | 2025-2026

The Fiat factory in Mirafiori Sud, Turin’s southerly industrial neighbourhood, is undergoing a quiet evacuation, as production is reduced and employees are periodically furloughed. Inspired by the 19th century industrial model village, which reconciled the importance of high-quality housing with the demands of industrial urbanism, my project converts an abandoned portion of the Fiat Mirafiori Sud plant into a live-work craft campus. The programme will allow for both university-level research and personal craft, being split into live-work cottages for individual craftspeople and university workshop space making recycled-material bricks. The live-work cottages will be made of these bricks, which are imprinted with a relief inspired by my own printmaking. In this project, the Arts and Crafts philosophy is enacted through a contemporary lens: offering an opportunity to return to bespoke craft as a mean of reinvigorating a postindustrial landscape once defined by the production line. by @unit11bartlett
