We exist to end systemic disadvantage so that every child and young person has unlimited opportunity.

POSTS STORIES REELS

It’s hard not to feel frustrated that women are still fighting to feel safe in their own homes, with their partners and in their communities, while specialist services face demand that exceeds available resources.

In this episode, I chat with Nicole Yade, CEO of WAGEC, about why we need to stop asking “Why doesn’t she just leave?” and start asking what would make it possible for her to leave safely?

Nicole also talks beautifully about hope. When the work feels overwhelming, she looks to the women in WAGEC’s shelters who have had the courage to leave. Leaving violence is itself an act of hope, a belief that something different is possible.

Creating safer futures will take all of us. As Nicole says, hope is action.

When a parent is lost to illicit drug use, the silence around it can be as heavy as the loss itself.

In this episode of No Ordinary People, Jade sits down with Jane Rowe, Founder and CEO of the Mirabel Foundation — a leader whose unwavering commitment to children impacted by parental substance use has shaped an entire model of care.

Jane is someone who saw a gap (children being left behind) and decided to change it.

It’s a conversation grounded in truth, but ultimately about hope, dignity, and belonging.

Last Thursday, 80 senior leaders from across our industry voluntarily spent a night in prison as part of UnLtd’s Adland Bail Out - raising awareness and funds to break the cycle of youth incarceration.

The 'inmates' were lined up, shouted at, fingerprinted, interrogated and locked in cells, before spending the night sleeping on cold concrete floors of a former youth detention centre.

Fortunately, all ‘inmates’ reached their bail and were released the following morning. The event raised over $151K for UnLtd’s work to break the vicious cycle of youth incarceration.

Huge congrats to the top fundraisers: Greg Kearney, Jason Tonelli GAICD, Georgia Brammer, Emma Beaumont, Aaron Boekestein, Daniel Brown, Amy Bradshaw, John Harvey Faurholt, Matt Turl, Francesca Ryan and Josh Faulks. 👏
There were some extraordinary fundraising efforts along the way - from the @omd_australia crew's 24-hour meeting walkathon to Denny Handlin auctioning space on his body for tattoos to support the cause. 💪

The most powerful part of the experience was hearing directly from young people with lived experience, who courageously shared their stories and reminded us why this issue matters. We heard from @mmadaustralia @raisetheagensw @theacmf and @backtrackyouthworks - all demonstrating that there are far better alternatives to prison.

A special thank you to our brilliant industry guards, who fully got into character and helped create a realistic experience - Greg Graham, Arvind Hickman, Chris Freel, Nicole Bence, Chris Murphy, Kathryn Furnari, Matthew Coote, Pia Coyle, Scott Laird, Sev Celik, Penny Davy, Nathan Jackson, Tim Bowen, Ricky Chanana, Nick Bower.👮

We still criminalise children as young as 10 in Australia.

In this episode of No Ordinary People, I sit down with Emily Mayo from Raise The Age NSW about what happens when police, courts, and detention become the default response to childhood behaviour.

If we want safer communities, we must stop treating trauma, disability, poverty, and racism as issues to be managed through punishment.

We know what works: early intervention, diversion, and community-led support.
We also know what doesn’t: detention that disrupts education, family connection, and health, and costs more than $1M per child, per year.

If we want a better way for kids and communities, we need to change the system.

A powerful new phase of the Raise the Age NSW campaign has launched, bringing together community leaders, frontline organisations and industry partners in a landmark collaboration for social change.

Created in partnership with @tag_ww, @carataus, Fiftyfive5, @justiceandequitycentre and UnLtd and more than 20 organisations, the campaign sends a clear message to the NSW Government: there is a better way to build safer communities and better outcomes for children.

At its heart are powerful voices from across the sector calling for the age of criminal responsibility to be raised to at least 14, and for greater investment in community-led support.

Timed to coincide with this week’s NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Youth Justice public hearings, the campaign is sending a powerful message to decision-makers: change your failing approach and invest in services and supports we know work. by @unltdanz

Tune in to hear @megantgilmour, Australian of the Year (ACT) and CEO of @missingschool_org talk about the 40% of Aussie kids isolated from school because of illness, disability, or mental health challenges.
