Three of our BA (Hons) Dance Science students had a great time at The Place recently learning about the screening process for their new cohort of students - observing tests assessing alignment, flexibility and turnout amongst other factors and learning a lot from different professionals in the field. It was such a cool experience - thank you to Chris and the staff at The Place for having us! by @uoc_dance

Our senior lecturer Dr Natalie Rowland presented her research into new materialist approaches to aerial theatre making at the Theatre & Performance Research Association conference at Queen Mary University last week.
Talking about the process of her latest work ‘Sea with Me’ Natalie has been exploring ways of dwelling and being-with aerial materials, considering scenography as a ‘world of input’ rather than a mode of creating worlds.

Dr Natalie Rowland is a practitioner-researcher based in the Dance Department at the University of Chichester, specialising in aerial dance and scenography. As an artist and researcher with an interdisciplinary practice, she finds the crossovers and relationships between dance, aerial, technologies and scenographic practice a fertile ground for exploring the potential of these arts.
Natalie teaches on our undergraduate programmes BA(hons) Dance, BA(hons) Dance Performance and is programme coordinator for our BA(hons) Dance and Aerial Arts, as well as designing for our touring companies @3falldancecompany and @mapdance by @uoc_dance

We're excited to restage a work by @kay.crook for our 2027 tour. Here is a pic of company alumni Erin performing the work in 2023.

MA DISSERTATION PRACTICE AS RESEARCH

Find your black holes and white walls, know them, know your faces; it is the only way you will be able to dismantle them and find lines of flight.

Drawing on the writings of Giles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Pulse propels its dancers from one black hole to the next; navigating shifting tensions, intensities, and states of being.

MA DISSERTATION PRACTICE AS RESEARCH

This research by Claudine Antaki is inspired by the traditional Egyptian Dance form,Raqs Sharqi (Belly dancing) and ancient Egyptian mythology. Reimagined through a contemporary lens, this piece explores how women navigate expectation, resistance, anger, and power; while examining how ancient representations of femininity continue to resonate in the present day.

Dancers: Chelsea Mitchell, Katie O’Neil, Charlotte Page, Tegan Soloman, Ruth Woolmer

MA DISSERTATIONS PRACTICE AS RESEARCH

Developed through rehearsal-based research, this work investigates the role of artificial intelligence as a creative collaborator within the choreographic process. Through AI generated prompts and collaborative experimentation, the piece explores how technology can influence creative decision-making and disrupt habitual movement and choreographic patterns. In doing so, it raises questions surrounding authorship within choreography and the ways in which emerging technologies can influence creative practice.

Dancers: Liana Dellapina, Katie O’Neill, & Ruth Woolmer

MA DISSERTATION PRACTICE AS RESEARCH

Analachadh for Alba explores how the use of breath can inform the quality and generation material and the connection between the dancers. The piece investigates the different ways breath plays a role in movement and acts as a catalyst to connect the dancers to their bodies in space and to each other.
