Dr Annabell Zander, our British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow was contestant #1 on popular German TV show "Sag die Wahrheit" discussing her research in climate change archaeology. She was introduced alongside two other contestants, with the celebrity panel being tasked with identifying the real scientist! Read more in the news story in our Linktree by @uoyarchaeology

On Sunday at @theyorkshiremuseum we had @yorkarchaeology’s annual Richard Hall Symposium, concerned with all things new in Viking-Age and early-medieval York. This year was very special, as we celebrated 50 years since the first spade went in the ground at Coppergate!

@medievalstudiesyork and @uoyarchaeology were well represented amongst the speakers, with great talks from PhD alumna Lucy Moore (Northumbrian pennies- not stycas!), recent MA student Chris Martin-Taylor (continental influences and The Viking Great Amy), Gareth Perry on 50 years of ceramic study, and Steve Ashby attempting to summarise all the craft evidence and artefact science. It’s amazing to see how far the field has come, at the same time acknowledging the huge continuing influence of that work. by @uoyarchaeology

We want to say a huge congratulations to Dept. collaborator Prof. Henny Piezonka, who has been picked as one of the top minds of Berlin Science - and all thanks to her collaboration with us on the ReNEW project! We think this prize is so very well deserved.

ReNEW is analysing how waste was managed and reused as hunter-gatherers and farmers adjusted to the new “thing heavy” world brought about by the start of widespread use of pottery. It is co-led in York by Prof. Penny Bickle and funded by the UK and German research councils: AHRC-DFG. by @uoyarchaeology

The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI) is the reference catalogue for close to half a million cuneiform texts, the earliest writing in the world. Most of them were found in Iraq. A new overview of the CDLI, co-authored by Émilie Pagé-Perron @archaeologydataservice, is now published in Arabic in the Isin Journal of the University of Al-Qadisiyah, Iraq, in a special issue in memory of the Iraqi archaeologist Dr Abdulamir Al-Hamdani. Congratulations to @sreelakshmi_subramanian on successfully passing her PhD viva!

Sree’s research explores the colonial afterlives of India’s railway World Heritage Sites and how these sites are experienced, remembered and given meaning today, focusing on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

Drawing on the concept of affective heritage, her work considers how the meanings of these sites are shaped not only by their colonial histories and official heritage narratives, but through everyday experiences, memories, emotions, negotiations and relationships with place.

Through ethnographic research and fieldwork, the study examines how colonial histories continue to resonate in the present, while also investigating how people reinterpret, negotiate and make these heritage sites meaningful on their own terms. Looking ahead, Sree hopes to extend this research by exploring the afterlives of British and other European colonialities, and how these continue to shape heritage, memory, identity and everyday relationships with place.

Completing the viva marks an important milestone in Sree’s PhD journey and the culmination of years of research into the complex relationships between colonial afterlives, heritage, memory and identity in India. Sree would also like to acknowledge and thank her supervisors, Prof. Emma Waterton (@hgc_research_centre) and Prof. Jason Dittmer, for their guidance and support throughout the PhD. by @uoyarchaeology

The first session of the @uoy_arch_soc Finds and Post-Excavation volunteering started at Archaeohub on Campus West this week! Students are helping to prepare the Malton Roman Finds Archive, ahead of going to the local Museum. A great opportunity to learn a CV skill, meet new people and help get a Site Archive on its way to its forever home! Thanks to everyone who helped out.

Have you thought about joining in with the other Archaeology Society activities? by @uoyarchaeology

The Green Impact Team at BioArCh have completed over 40 Green Impact Laboratory Accreditation actions to secure GILA Accreditation for our labs! This has included increased recycling, reduced energy use and incorporating bioethanol into workflows. You can read more about their work via the link in our Linktree🌱 by @uoyarchaeology

Testing is underway! 🐋🧬

The Naburn Whale is a rare specimen believed to be a beluga whale, found stranded at Naburn Lock near York in 1905. Its skeleton has been part of our collection for more than a century, but its species has never been scientifically confirmed.

Now, experts from the Department of Archaeology at the University of York have collected a small bone sample from one of its flippers to help solve the mystery.

Part of the sample will be analysed using ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) — a technique that identifies animals using the protein ‘fingerprint’ preserved in their bones. This will help determine whether the skeleton is a beluga, a narwhal or another species of whale.

The remaining bone powder will undergo DNA analysis, providing further evidence to confirm the species and determine whether the whale was male or female.

We can’t wait to find out what the results reveal! 👀

New research sheds light on the inspiration for geometric ornaments on mammoth ivory pieces made in Ukraine 19000 years ago. Digital analysis of so-called Venus figurines from Mizyn shows a connection between the natural patterns of ivory growth and the figurines' ornamentation. Together with other evidence collected in the paper, this renders mammoth art from Eastern Europe a unique phenomenon separate from its Western analogies. Figurines from Mizyn offer an early example of a distinct trend that previously received little attention or discussion. This research is part of a broader collaboration between the University of York @year_centre, the University of Stavanger (Norway), and the @lab_archaic," which focuses on cultural heritage studies and preservation in Ukraine. More projects to come!

We had a great time at York’s #Guildhall on Saturday, co-hosting @socmedarch ’s annual conference, spending the day talking all things #medievalarchaeology and #heritagescience by @uoyarchaeology

I'm delighted to share that I've been awarded funding by the @socantscot, @orkneyarchaeologysociety and @uoyarchaeology to support my current research into the bead assemblage from Skara Brae.

The grants have enabled me to carry out biomolecular analysis of selected artefacts and access the assemblage that is housed across multiple museums, including @nationalmuseumsscotland and @britishmuseum. Next week, I'll begin my travels North to Orkney to study the artefacts held by @orkney.museums @skaillhouse and @stromnessmuseum.

During my visit, I'll be giving a talk at 19:00 on the 1st of October @ Kings Street Halls, Kirkwall, for the OAS. In the meantime, you can find a link to my latest research update in my bio. by @uoyarchaeology

We’re hiring! Following European and UK funding success, we are recruiting two permanent Technical Specialist roles in our Stable Isotope Facility. As a Technical Specialist, you will be a key contributor to our continuing advancement of isotopic analysis in archaeology and palaeoecology. We encourage applications from all career stages and backgrounds, with experience in archaeology, ecology, environmental science or chemistry especially welcomed. Deadline for both roles 29th September.

In addition to the Technical Specialist roles, recent funding via the AHRC RICHeS Programme has allowed us to expand our technical team, and we are thrilled to be recruiting for a Laboratory Technician on a permanent basis. This entry level role is an excellent opportunity for you to put your laboratory skills and experience to use in a dynamic and exciting research setting. You will be supported in your development as a technician, so while familiarity with archaeological science is desirable, we welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Deadline 15th September.
