For Druhan Chhugani and Amrit Nagpal, furniture begins with curiosity, observation, and the courage to create something unfamiliar. Through Urban Artisans Collaborative (UAC), the duo brings together architecture, craftsmanship, and experimentation to shape pieces that feel both sculptural and deeply functional.

Inspired by everyday moments, urban life, science fiction, and nature, their work carries a sense of playfulness and surprise. From challenging gravity with the Spider Chair to developing near-seamless metal techniques for the Origami Collection, every piece reflects patience, process, and relentless exploration.

At the heart of UAC is collaboration, with artisans, materials, and ideas. Their designs don’t simply occupy a space; they spark conversations, invite interaction, and turn everyday objects into experiences.

WE WERE WONDERING: WHICH PART OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS EXCITES YOU THE MOST?

HERE’SWHAT THEY SHARED:
As designers we tend to fall in love with the select materials, but the most addictive part is the utilization of these materials beyond what we have seen and observed: “treading into the unknown“.

We love it when people ask us how we could conjure up something like this. by @urban.artisans.co

In conversation with Druhan Chhugani and Amrit Nagpal, founders @urban.artisans.co ; Bustling and Energetic explorers of new design Languages by @urban.artisans.co

WE ASKED: WHAT’S ONE UNCONVENTIONAL DETAIL OR APPROACH YOU LOVE ADDING TO YOUR WORK THAT NOT EVERYONE NOTICES AT FIRST GLANCE?

THEM:
As architects we love to explore the structural capabilities of our forms and a lot of these elements are tucked away within our designs. We take pride in the way we make our designs structurally unique, it is this exploration that grants us the flexibility to create new forms. by @urban.artisans.co

$WE ASKED: WHAT’S A CREATIVE RISK YOU’VE TAKEN THAT PAID OFF BEAUTIFULLY? THEY SAID: Even though we may see innovation in design everywhere around us, with multiple brands coming up with a few new concepts every other year, it still is in fact just a minimal fraction of the actual designer products market. The most flexible part of design is the ideation of form. We really work towards making something nostalgic yet strange. by @urban.artisans.co$

TELL US: WHAT MATERIAL/TEXTURE/INGREDIENT DO YOU LOVE WORKING WITH THE MOST - AND WHY DOES IT RESONATE WITH YOU?

If were to describe a material that was imperfectly perfect, it would be stainless steel. It has the ability to be accurate, clean, sharp and pristine but it rarely ever is. It’s the flaws within the material that we are constantly battling against. by @urban.artisans.co

FROM US: WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS REMEMBER MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH YOU?

THEM:
I think what we bring to the table is confidence and a sense of security. Whenever we have to deal with a client we make it a priority to educate them in understanding design languages and guide them towards an outcome that they would not regret in the future. by @urban.artisans.co

In #ThisWeek of D-Talks: A Series of Contemporary Art Dialogues in South Asia, we talk to Druhan Chhugani (@druhanchhugani5) and Amrit Nagpal (@amritt99), the founder of Urban Artisans Collaborative (UAC) (@urban.artisans.co).

UAC’s approach is distinctly different – each piece draws inspiration from both science fiction’s boundless imagination and nature’s timeless patterns. Their work aims to be “accent pieces” – conversation starters that elevate spaces through a delicate balance of innovation and timeless design.
