Here are 8 technical things every architecture student should know before entering an architecture firm.

1. How to Read a Working Drawing
Don’t just learn how to make beautiful plans. Understand how to read architectural working drawings, sections, elevations, dimensions, levels, annotations and construction details.
Because a design is only useful when someone on site can understand and execute it.

2. Basic Structural Systems
You don’t need to become a structural engineer, but you should understand columns, beams, slabs, foundations, load-bearing walls and structural grids.
You should know how your design decisions affect the structural system.

3. Construction Details
Know how different building elements come together.
For example, staircase details, door and window sections, parapets, waterproofing details, expansion joints and toilet detailing.
These are the details that turn a design into a buildable project.

4. Plumbing and Electrical Layouts
Understand the basics of plumbing, drainage, electrical points, lighting layouts, switchboards and service shafts.
You should know where these services go and how they coordinate with your architectural design.

5. Building Materials and Their Applications
Don’t just recognise materials by their names.
Understand their properties, applications, installation methods, durability and limitations.
Know when to use stone, tiles, concrete, glass, wood, aluminium and other materials.

6. Site Measurements and Setting Out
Learn how to take measurements on site, understand levels, check dimensions and interpret setting-out drawings.
Because what is shown on your computer screen and what exists on site may not always match.

7. BOQ, Specifications and Cost Estimation
Understand what a Bill of Quantities is, how material quantities are calculated and how specifications are written.
You should have a basic understanding of how construction costs are estimated and controlled.

10 Habits Every Architecture Student Should Develop:

1. Observe Buildings Wherever You Go
Don’t just look at buildings; analyse them. Notice the entrance, proportions, materials, natural lighting and how people use the space. Every building can teach you something.

2. Study One Floor Plan Every Day
Pick any building and study its floor plan. Understand the zoning, circulation, furniture placement and relationship between spaces. This daily habit can gradually improve your spatial thinking.

3. Read Beyond Your Syllabus
Read books about architecture, psychology, history, cities and human behaviour. The more you understand people and their surroundings, the more thoughtfully you can design for them.

4. Practise Your Software Skills Regularly
Don’t wait for your next submission to open AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp or other design tools. Practise consistently and build small projects. Remember, knowing a tool is different from knowing how to use it to solve a design problem.

5. Visit Construction Sites Whenever Possible
Observe how drawings become actual buildings. Study materials, construction details, joints and the way different building elements come together. What you learn on site can help you design more practical and buildable spaces.

6. Learn Something About Materials Every Week
Choose one material and understand its properties, applications, cost, durability and limitations. Don’t just select materials because they look beautiful in a render. Learn how they perform in real life.

7. Improve Your Communication Skills
Practise explaining your design concepts in simple language. Learn to present your ideas, justify your decisions and accept constructive criticism. A good architect must be able to communicate ideas, not just draw them.

8. Document What You Observe
Take photographs of buildings, sketch interesting details and maintain a reference folder. Whenever you see an inspiring space, record what makes it work. Over time, you’ll build your own library of architectural knowledge.

Our first city in Vietnam was Ho Chi Minh. And these images are from the first day when we landed. We were so tired but the moment we stepped onto the streets of Ho Chi Minh, we were all charged up.

As an Architect and Traveler, I was surprised to see 1BHK this amazing. Also the apartments were really cool. Then we explored the book street. It was so welcoming. The trees, the statue, the book, and the cafés, they all together increased the vibrancy of the street overall.

On exploring the area more, we found independence palace which was also interesting to explore. We loved the view from the upper balcony.

You cannot explore a city by sitting in a car. But you can explore a lot by walking. So we walked on the shaded and well lit up pathways, and we litreally stopped so many times just to adore the beauty of the buildings. From random lit up shops to beautiful ornamented hotel entrances, we loved Ho Chi Minh. And on day one, we fell in love with the city and promised to come back soon.

Would you like to explore Ho Chi Minh?
