Early feasibility studies for our Eco-Loft in Stoke Newington. These sketches explore light, massing and proportion, balancing spatial ambition with the strict volumetric limits set by the planners.

Some initial photos of our completed eco-loft and outrigger extension in Stoke Newington!

Carefully refined massing, a curved shower wall and a simple corner window framing views of a neighbouring willow tree help the space feel larger than its footprint.

Clad in standing-seam zinc to enable clean, discreet fixing of solar panels.

Great to see House on the Hill featured in @premierconstruction_mag

House on the Hill is an ambitious residential extension and refurbishment inspired by the Arts and Crafts vernacular embedded in the identity of the local region. Sitting on a hillside overlooking Guildford, the existing 1930s house was in need of extensive renovation and refurbishment to make it live-able for a growing family. A design-led approach involved the creation of an inspiring and dramatic sequence of living spaces which connect to the landscape, and maximise views of the garden, the city, and the sky above.

Thank you to Ruby Betts at Dezeen for this interview. It was great to discuss transformations in architectural education and the ways in which we are preparing our students in spatial practices at CSM for the future. In the contemporary context, in which we are facing immense challenges in higher education and across the spatial disciplines, it’s essential that we use our creative skills to shape the world for the better. Great to be in the @architectsjournal today

UPB have completed the sensitive restoration and holistic transformation of a Victorian terrace house in East London into a 4 storey family home. Working in close collaboration with our client, the culturally-led design is influenced by the living patterns and cultural practices of the family’s roots in south east Asia.
Inspired by Islamic courtyard houses, we created a 3-storey gallery at the centre of the house, around which the kitchen, living room and study are organised. The new kitchen is conceived of as a courtyard at the centre of the house and is linked to the living spaces by new staircases and a bridge. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home and it is a space where the family comes together to cook, congregate and share. Large landscape-steps lead down from the kitchen to a new basement family room.

House on the Hill, Guildford
House on the Hill is an ambitious residential extension and refurbishment inspired by Arts and Crafts houses.

Learning from the Arts-and-Crafts vernacular embedded in the identity of the surrounding area, our first move was to extend the rear roof line down to the ground floor until it nearly touched the garden. Into this, we inserted two new ‘inhabitable’ dormer windows; one stretching from the ground to the first floor, creating a double-height living space; the second from first floor to second floor, containing a new staircase to two new bedrooms in the roof. We restricted our palette to materials already in the house, and re-used existing bricks, tiles and timbers where possible.

UPB’s extension and refurbishment of a Georgian Grade II listed town house within the De Beauvoir Conservation Area in Hackney.

Clad in dark grey aluminium, the number and size of panels as well as the positioning of joints were carefully considered to create a shear and contemporary aesthetic that sits in stark
contrast to the busy and fragmented geometry of the original brick façade and 12 pane, timber sash windows behind.

Southgate Road, London

UPB carried out the sensitive extension and refurbishment of a Georgian Grade II listed town house within the De Beauvoir Conservation Area in Hackney.

The proposals involved the removal and replacement of an existing dark and dilapidated rear extension to create a new, light filled contemporary kitchen, dining and living space more suited to the daily routine of a modern family. Clad in dark grey aluminium, the number and size of panels as well as the positioning of joints were carefully considered in order to create a shear and contemporary aesthetic that sits in stark contrast to the busy and fragmented geometry of the original brick façade and 12 pane, timber sash windows behind.

The existing side extension (originally a Pewter Workshop) was renovated to create a brightly lit play area and a new opening provided into the rear kitchen extension to help open up the ground floor whilst still respecting the layout and room proportions of the existing building.

Southgate Road, London

UPB carried out the sensitive extension and refurbishment of a Georgian Grade II listed town house within the De Beauvoir Conservation Area in Hackney.

The listed status of the original 3–story house meant that an on-going dialogue with the Hackney Planning Authority was required to ensure the protection, restoration and enhancement of as many of the building’s original features as possible and to develop design proposals that would provide a sensitive response to the character and appearance of the De Beauvoir Conservation Area.

Broomhill Road, London | Details
Sensitive restoration and holistic transformation of a Victorian terrace house in East London into a 4-storey family home reflecting the lifestyle and cultural practices of the family’s South Asian roots.

Paying intense attention to detail, colour, texture and finish, the house is infused with a new material language that creates a consistent and harmonious internal environment. Views are created through the depth of the house, linking front and rear gardens and integrating landscape elements with the internal domestic environment. An internal winter-garden in the dining room creates a resting place and transition between interior and exterior, garden and house.
