I first started Spice on the Beat to share how it felt to be a young Indian woman in the hip-hop industry. It's given me a place of belonging, and yet, I knew that I was an outsider. It's given me the opportunity to explore my dominant, boss bitch side when working with artists. However, as I got older, I cultivated a new community that I didn't think existed, and man, am I thankful for it. This photoshoot is special to me, not only because it incorporates my culture with my love for the genre, something which inherently makes Spice on the Beat what it is, but also because of who helped make this happen. Everyone who contributed to these photos were incredible Brown, female entrepreneurs working against stigmas and stereotypes to create and provide something new to the world. I'm so proud of these incredible women and so thankful that they would lend their talents to help execute this idea.

Shoutout to @shanzadi , a Pakistani mehndi artist who created @handoverthehenna and painted my hands so beautifully and effortlessly. Thank you to @nattycontrera , a Lebanese-Sicilian make-up artist who perfected my signature cat-eye and helped enhance my South Asian features. And of course, thank you to @leeannahari , a Guyanese-Indian photographer out of NYC who captured the Desi essence of Spice on the Beat. You guys are magical and I'm so lucky to call you all my friends.✨️

A little intro to who I am and what I do :)

I'm Shaana, a Philly-based music writer with a strong passion for Hip-Hop and R&B. I've worked in music for quite some time, trying to find a place for myself in a seemingly endless industry. After taking on roles like artist development and tour management, I discovered that I had a love for helping artists navigate through a business that had no real guidebook or code of conduct. Instead, it's a lot of trial and error, connections, and discovering what works best for your particular art and goals.

In 2019, I started Spice on the Beat to share my experiences, thoughts, perspective, and love for music. Once the pandemic hit and the entertainment industry was impacted heavily, I realized a way that I could utilize my platform to connect with artists all over the world with no motive other than to share their art and show them that they had someone in their corner. I've met a lot of you through that site and I'm so thankful for the art that it's introduced me to.

Fast forward to 2022, and I've launched Cadence in the Clouds, an extension to Spice on the Beat. Cadence is the live music aspect, with Philly being at the forefront. By creating a concert experience tailored for artists and creatives, I hope to provide them with the resources they may need around Philadelphia to take their passions to the next level, all while encouraging collaboration in the Philly art and entrepreneurial communities. The City of Brotherly Love has way too much talent to be as underrated as it is, and I believe that with platforms like this, we can show that to the world.

If you'd like to experience Cadence in the Clouds, our first show is this Friday featuring incredible talent like @ayyruffin and @theingloriousmusic . If you'd like to learn more about this or how you can be a part of our shows, please give @cadenceintheclouds a follow. You can purchase one of our limited tickets at the link in that bio or my story❤

This year, my parents gifted me a trip to Paris to recreate a trip my mom took there with her mom years ago. My grandmother's birthday was just a few days ago, and I cant help but reflect on her life. She experienced so much hardship, being married off at a young age. She eventually found her way to my grandfather, where she got to truly experience love, a love that was passed on to my mom, and eventually to my brother and I. I feel my grandmother's essence in my spirit, and even more as I get older. There arent many places in the world where I get to share the steps my grandmother took, so it was lovely to imagine her in a saree walking the Parisian streets✨️❤️ by @urfavbrunette

So many fun things coming up! We're continuing 2026 with some really fun collaborations that I'm extremely excited to announce.

We kick things off with a special night on Sunday as the Ranstead Room opens up for a very rare Sunday evening with some of the most aromatic cocktails from @i.am.shaan and @sam.eshi . We'll be Exploring the Spice with an incredible and exclusive list of cocktails with the Desi soundtrack to match.

Then, we're closing up August with our friends at @beautyiscultureevents for an amazing night of dancing to Arab and Desi records at Khyber Pass.

September has something truly special in store, but you'll have to wait for that!

I also have so many posts coming, with my most recent including coverage and interviews from the P-Funk Music Festival. This week, I'll also be sitting down with the illustrious Dice Raw to talk about his new album. I'll have my first ever, subscription-only industry blog up this week which gives tips and tricks to young artists. And our course, a new editorial because this world has us feeling all the feelings and looking to music for refuge.

I cant wait to share all of these things with you all!

Recalibrating🧿 by @urfavbrunette

It's taken me a few weeks to digest the entirety of this year's 30th birthday celebrations, just because so much love was poured into every aspect of it. I get overwhelmed by the people in my life. They fulfill every ounce of my being, and have ensured I've never once felt lacking in love. I am truly honored and amazed by the way people took the time and energy to celebrate me. I don't know what I did to deserve it, but I'll never take it for granted.

To my mom, thank you for the gift of life, for the gift of penmanship, for the gift of your incredible poetry, and for every single thing you did to make this happen. To my daddy, thank you for always pushing yourself to the limit whenever I'm involved. No matter what, you always do everything you can for me. To Sahil and Qin, thank you for the pictures, for the incredible cake, and for just being there. Ever since I was little, there has been nothing more I've wanted in my life than to see my brother happy and smiling.

To @lysslauf @ksukr1 @cosmobaker @therealmeegan @shanzadi , thank you thank you thank you. I'm so lucky to have every single one of you. Every detail you put in to this was incredible.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. I am still so overwhelmed, and in awe of the people in my life.❤️ by @urfavbrunette

Just two days until we close out AAPI night at 48 Record Bar with Exploring The Spice: a night of Desi vinyl, Desi snacks, mehndi, and so much more! I'm so excited for this night and to share with you the music that shaped my love for all of the sounds I hear. This music stirs emotions in me like no other, and although I'm not always the most vocal about it, this music means the world to me. Tickets can be purchased at the link in my bio!

I also have some new write ups with @snacktime and @jahisundance on Spice on the Beat. Check it out now and don't forget to subscribe! My coverage from @yolikegeorge and the P-Funk festival will be up soon, along with my first ever Premium Post for artists💜 by @urfavbrunette

Join us May 28th for Exploring The Spice, a celebration at 48 Record Bar to close out AAPI month with my personal collection of Desi records, a valuable selection that has shaped the way I've experienced music since childhood. I grew up in a music lovers home, with so many different sounds filling our walls. Some of my earliest memories involve bollywood movie soundtracks, and some of my earliest Hip-Hop beats incorporated Punjabi beats. They're still some of my most cherished songs and I'm so excited to share them with you.❤️
@handoverthehenna will be providing beautiful henna designs. We will also have small delicious Indian snacks that are popular drinking accompaniments, so get ready to not only hear the spice, but taste it as well!

Tickets at the link in my bio. Limited seating available by @urfavbrunette

Happy birthday to my little Persephone❤️

This beautiful piece of artwork from @lazybeamarte serves as the artwork for my newest article, Trump's Downfall, Part 2. I initially created the first piece six years ago to highlight Trump's demise in hip-hop, where he first sat on top of a throne of lyrical references, idealizing his riches. As his presidency came to fruition, some rappers stayed by his side, praising his business man approach to our country, while others looked at him with disgust as he lit a torch of racism and division to bring to light some of the belief systems which we thought we left in the past, but instead were hidden in the dark. Years later, things haven't changed, they've only gotten worse. So much so, that I had to create a second post to unleash my anger and frustration with the decline of our country.

Manuela, the artist who created the featured piece, will be live painting at my next Cadence in the Clouds, and then auctioning off the final piece, as well as selling prints of this and others. @sahlii_369 , our newer face to the Cadence stage will be singing and rapping about his journey through life, about hope, about freedom, and other things we yearn for in this lifetime. My friend @arobsmusic will also be joining the stage to share his life through the eyes of a Palestinian artist, balancing out advocating for a Free Palestine with his creativity that gives him a release from the struggles of the world. @thekidbearone will be by my side as per usual, setting the mood.

@alsalamgrill will be providing some delicious Palestinian bites, and @partygirl.worldwide is sponsoring the event with sweet treats that your mind could not even fathom.

@ginapauling_ is generously donating a powerful piece with proceeds that will be donated, and my dear @maidenseptember will be lending her extraordinary engraving talents for a keepsake that reflects and embodies the movement.

There is so much more to be announced. Every creative that purchases a ticket can opt in to a free artist bio. I will also be doing a limited release of 20 $20 tickets, so if you are interested or even just want to purchase a ticket to support, the link is in my bio, along with my newest article. by @urfavbrunette
