Riley Friesen discovered his passion for the mysteries of space in high school. Today, as a fourth-year student in astronomy and physics and a member of the K-12 Indigenous STEM (InSTEM) outreach team, he shares his love for science and the stars with young Indigenous learners through summer camps.

A recent $1.3M CAD gift from a UVic alum and their partner will fund Indigenous entrance awards, learning placements in climate and sustainability, and Indigenous youth STEM programming—strengthening pathways from elementary school to graduate studies.

Victoria is witchin’🧙

🌟John Threlfall, UVic alum, staff member and local public media witch, takes us into the history of witchcraft in Victoria.

Historically, people accused of witchcraft faced persecution. Today, learning about witchcraft’s past and the traditions that continue to shape communities offers a chance to better understand the people, beliefs and practices. There’s more to this history than spooky stories.

🪄Want to learn more? Join John at the campus Multifaith Centre on Nov. 2 at 12:00pm for an insider’s history of local witchcraft. by @uvicalumni

UVic Creative Writing grad Portia Elan, MFA ’13, celebrates the release of her debut novel Homebound with an event at Munro’s Books, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m.

She’ll be joined in conversation with fellow UVic grad and Creative Writing professor David Leach.

Homebound (Simon & Schuster) tells the story of a queer teen in the ’80s and the computer game she writes that echoes 600 years into the future. Writer Emma Donoghue describes it as “a fascinatingly plausible and atmospheric story of a future shaped by tech and love intertwined.”

🎉 Congratulations to Gladstone Brewing Co. and its owner UVic grad Daniel Sharratt (MA ’12) for being named Brewery of the Year at the 2026 BC Beer Awards.

It’s the second time in five years the Courtenay-based brewery has taken home the honours. 🏆

Incidentally, Gladstone Brewing’s name is a nod to Sharratt’s time at UVic when he first started brewing beer in his garage on Gladstone Avenue in Fernwood Village.

Gladstone also won four individual BC Beer Awards:
• Gold for its Gladstone Red Ale
• Two silvers for Gladstone Matt’s PNW Pale Ale and Gladstone Kolsch
• Bronze award for its Gladstone Pilsner.

As Nathan Fielder’s critically acclaimed and much talked about documentary You Can See Everything gets a wider theatrical release this week, here’s everything you need to know about UVic’s most famous business grad… besides the fact that he got “really good grades.”

**BTW: Slide 8 should read Benny Safdie, not Josh Safdie. Apologies for the mistake.
