Kailey Lawless is using her degree to help people in need of a second chance — just like the one she got.

After dropping out of high school and years spent battling addiction, homelessness and the justice system, Kailey knew she needed to make a change for her future and for her kids.

After two years at Tacoma Community College, she transferred to @uwtacoma where she's been working to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare — a degree that she'll use to help people toward a path to success, like the one that she's found. 🎓💜 by @uwtacoma

“We are still here,” says Andrea Bob (‘23), MSBA candidate at UW Tacoma and member of the @puyalluptribeofindians. “People may not recognize us without our regalia, but we’re still here — living and thriving in every space, every day, in every form.”

Realized in collaboration with @uwtcedar and the Office of Indigenous Engagement, this portrait series reflects the presence and perspectives of Native students in the spaces where they learn, lead and build community at UW Tacoma. 💛💜

Native students represent three percent of our student body at UWT — more than three times the national average for postsecondary education.

The Office of Indigenous Engagement at UWT works to increase Native student recruitment and retention on campus, coordinating with local tribes to promote initiatives that benefit Indigenous learners and encourage tribal engagement in Tacoma and beyond.

@uwtcedar, the Native and Indigenous student organization at UWT, exists to prioritize the prescience and education of Indigenous culture on campus.

In observance of Native American Heritage Day, we honor the stories they choose to carry forward and those they’re writing for themselves.

Tacoma made its name as a port town and a military town.

We’re known for our industry, museums, waterfront parks, art and creativity.

That’s all true and hard-won.

But make no mistake about it: Tacoma is also a college town. 💜

Take it from Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange, who co-authored an opinion piece in @thenewstribune with fellow South Sound university leaders President Isiaah Crawford (@univpugetsound) and President Allan Belton (@pacificlutheran) about the critical role Tacoma’s universities play in our region’s economic growth and vitality.

Only 32% of Pierce County adults age 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, yet research shows that roughly 70% of future jobs will require some education or training beyond high school.

Closing this gap is part of our mission.

🎙️New Episode! When the @uwtacoma (University of Washington Tacoma) was established 35 years ago, its location in downtown Tacoma was intentional.

The idea was that bringing a university into the city would do more than expand access to higher education. It would also contribute to economic development, create opportunities for local residents, and help strengthen the surrounding community.

In the latest episode of the Move to Tacoma Podcast, host Marguerite Martin talks with UW Tacoma Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange and Associate Vice Chancellor for Social Mobility Amanda Figueroa about how that vision is playing out today.

A big part of the conversation focuses on social mobility:

📈What does it actually mean for someone to have the opportunity to improve their economic circumstances?

🎓How does education help people build not just better-paying careers, but more choices about how they want to live their lives?

They discuss the importance of professional networks, the challenges of paying for college, why so many UW Tacoma students are the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, and how education can change the trajectory of an entire family.

UW Tacoma was established with the understanding that the university and the community could grow together. Students would gain access to education and careers, while the city would benefit from a more educated workforce, new economic activity, and stronger connections between institutions and residents.

‘Tis the season to forage for freebies from our friends at @starbucks: It’s time to play Campus Clues and Cold Brews! ☕

The first 10 clues are now live on Instagram Stories, with 10 more to come later this afternoon at 2 p.m. If the clue is still live, then so is the prize. 🎫

Ready, set, search!

Happy hunting, Tacoma Huskies. 🐾💜 by @uwtacoma

The wind’s picking up down Pac Ave, and something’s brewing on campus.

Follow the clues, and it might just lead you to @starbucks. ☕👀

Served up hot with extra pumpkin spice, it’s Campus Clues and Cold Brews. 🎃 The Starbucks Treasure Hunt is back again for fall quarter on Thursday, October 15. We’ll toast to that!

First time on the hunt? Here’s how it works:

Golden tickets will be hidden across UW Tacoma — tucked in nooks, halls and historic corners where the ghosts of Grit City might still roam.

Solve the clues, find the prize and claim your fall treat from Starbucks and friends.

Two drops. Twenty clues. One haunted hunt.

Are you in? 🍂

Check back this Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. for your first round of clues. by @uwtacoma

💜🍂 ICYMI: Under crisp autumn skies, with sunshine filtering through the trees and purple and gold on full display, Convocation — UW Tacoma’s annual back-to-school celebration – part block party, part resource fair – opened the 2026–2027 academic year on campus. 🎉

After a performance by the Lincoln High School drumline, the speaking program included welcoming messages of support from Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mentha Hynes-Wilson, Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Andy Harris, and Associated Students of UW Tacoma (@asuwt) President Terrell Stalworth. David Sway-La Cougar Duenas, a UW Tacoma alumnus and member of the Puyallup Nation, offered a traditional song of strength.

Tables hosted by departments across campus connected students to academic programs, food resources, affinity centers and more. From the Center for Student Involvement to the Office of Indigenous Engagement and from the University YMCA Student Center to the Office of Global Affairs, students were introduced to many opportunities to get involved and make connections.
