💔 My heart is absolutely broken over the loss of our dear captain @sirpatstew, an incredible, inspiring person both on screen and off. I watched TNG for the first time in my adulthood and recognized immediately that there’s just no one quite like Jean-Luc Picard. Then to see how passionate the man behind the character was about pit bulls, a breed I love fiercely, and he knew how to knit too?! He quickly earned a spot as one of my favorite people, so of course I designed a pattern inspired by him and one of his great works, and my grid would feel empty without acknowledging him now. He will be sorely missed. ❤️🖖🏼🖤 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #patrickstewart #sirpatrickstewart #startrektng #startrekthenextgeneration #startrekpicard by @vanessasmithdesigns
Did you see that little hem detail on Vest Behavior, my new pattern featured in @purlmagazine? 👀 Here’s the quick version of how to do it! A full picot cast on + cable cast on tutorial is available on my YouTube channel, linked in my bio. Let me know if you’ve done a picot cast on before—or if you’ll be trying it soon! 💜 #purlmagazine #vanessasmithdesigns #knittersofinstagram #caston #knittingtutorial by @vanessasmithdesigns
If you noticed the vest that’s been making an appearance in my recent photos, here’s its official debut! 🎉 I’m thrilled to introduce Vest Behavior, featured in @purlmagazine’s inaugural Cast On issue. Swipe through to see a preview and more details. 👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The whole magazine turned out beautifully, and it was such an honor to be invited to contribute a pattern. In celebration of the issue’s theme, the vest starts with a fun picot cast on that transitions into a mini mock cable rib before alternating between stockinette and textured, beaded stripes. If beads aren’t your thing, though, you can simply purl the stitches for a similar textural effect! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The pattern is size inclusive, with finished bust circumferences ranging 31–67.25” (77.5–168 cm) and your choice to include waist shaping or not. It also uses just 2–3 skeins of @missbabsyarns’ Yowza across the size range. Of course, I used the colorway Lilacs. Y’all know I can’t quit purple, and I was pumped to see it as a color on the issue’s mood board. 💜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The digital issue went live on August 1st, and print copies started shipping this week! Grab your copy through the links in my bio or keep an eye out for one at your local yarn shop, and let me know if you’ll be working on your own Vest Behavior 😘 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #purlmagazine #vanessasmithdesigns #knitting #knittersofinstagram #knittingpatterns by @vanessasmithdesigns
When your cute new stitch markers match and are exactly what you need for your current WIP ❤️💜🧡 These gorgeous, handmade markers were gifted to me @flockfiberfestival last weekend, and I couldn’t wait to swap out my bulb stitch markers for them. Thank you so much for this lovely set, @avhn. They’re making my tactile-loving heart so happy. 🥹 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #strandedknitting #strandedcolorwork #colorworkknitting #spincycleyarns by @vanessasmithdesigns
Flock Fiber Festival 2026 ✨ Wow, what an incredible weekend full of hugs, great vibes, and that amazing fiber community energy. I loved every minute of it—reconnecting with test knitters, fellow 2025 Mount Rainier Retreat attendees, and longtime friends. I didn’t get pictures with everyone or of everything, but the memories will definitely last a lifetime. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you so much to Jess @flockfiberfestival for the opportunity to be part of the show, not only through my classes but also at the Marketplace Designer Table. I met so many kind and talented knitters and crocheters, and I can’t wait to do it all over again next year! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Same time, same place? 😘 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #flockfiberfestival #diversknitty #fibercommunity #yarncommunity by @vanessasmithdesigns
As the publisher, I get an early, advance copy of each magazine and it’s the best part of the job! Look at PURL! When I started PLY 13 years ago, I never thought it would lead to this. Thanks so all our brave kickstarter supporters, all of our wonderful advertisers, all of our brilliant contributors, we couldn’t have done it without y’all! If you are a print subscriber, your issue ships on the 10th so look for it over the next few weeks, but your digital issue is already available (if you didn’t see the email, check your spam folder). I hope everyone loves it as much as we do. Here’s a little flip through. And here's some of our contributors: @kateatherleyknits @xandypeters @farwellclay @aimeeshermakes @disturbingthefleece @textile_anthropologist @bobbleclubhouse @tellybeanknits @bayronhandmade @kirakdesigns @hannahbelleknits @lizalaird @tanisfiberarts @pattyjlyons @imagined_landscapes @vanessasmithdesigns @drunkknitter @l.toppin @theknittingfairy @tina.say.makes @natalieinstitches @woollywormhead @knitatude @hikaru_noguchi_design by @vanessasmithdesigns
👋🏼 Hi friends! I’ve been buried in prep all week but finally emerging! I’m so excited and just wanted to share that in addition to teaching @flockfiberfestival this year, I’ll be at the Marketplace Designer Table tomorrow morning from 11–12, and this is what I’ll be wearing. 👀 Yes, this is a new pattern and a first look at something featured in the Cast On issue of @purlmagazine! I’ll share more in the days to come, but in the meantime, if you’ll be at Flock on Saturday, please say hi if you see me! 💜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #flockfiberfestival #vanessasmithdesigns #purlmagazine #knittersofinstagram #knitting by @vanessasmithdesigns
Thank you so much for the incredibly warm welcome of the Tipping Point Scarf! ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m blown away by your response, and it made my whole week to see the pattern make an appearance on the first page of Ravelry’s Hot Right Now! And now comes the fun part: watching as everyone stash dives or hunts for the perfect yarn at their local yarn shops or upcoming fiber festivals! I can’t wait to see what you all find and how your versions turn out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I also want to give a big shout out to all the amazing test knitters who helped bring this pattern to life. As a group, we stash busted about 40 skeins of yarn! 💪🏼 Photos of some of their beautiful scarves are available in a story highlight on my profile, in a test knitter gallery on my website, and on Ravelry. I definitely encourage you to take a look at their projects; they’re all so inspiring! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those who haven’t grabbed a copy of this pattern yet, don’t forget to use the code onpoint15 for 15% off through Sunday night, or subscribe to my newsletter for a little somethin’ extra. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thanks again and happy knitting, everyone! 💜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #newknittingpattern #skinnyscarf #stashbusting #knittersofravelry by @vanessasmithdesigns
The Tipping Point Scarf is officially live! ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That single skein that’s been sitting in your stash or the yarn you recently bought on a whim finally has its perfect project. This pattern was designed specifically for those times when you want to use up what you’ve got, try out a new base or colorway, or simply make something quick and satisfying for yourself or a loved one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s knit in my favorite textured lace stitch (that squishy, potato-chippy fabric you’ve come to know and love too!) and includes a video guide that walks you through the main techniques. You can choose from three sizes—skinny, midi, or chonky—based entirely on how much yarn you have on hand, and the scarf can be made at any gauge. Skip the swatch and knit with abandon! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Find all the links in my bio, and grab the pattern now using code onpoint15 for 15% off through Sunday, July 26. (New and current newsletter subscribers, check your inbox for an exclusive treat! 💌) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Which size are you most excited to make? Let me know in the comments! 👇 And if you know someone who needs a cute scarf that uses just one or two skeins in their life, feel free to tag them below or share! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #tippingpointscarf #newknittingpattern #stashbuster #knittingpatterns by @vanessasmithdesigns
Something new drops this Wednesday, and it’s exactly what those single skeins sitting in your stash or that lovely yarn you bought without a plan have been waiting for . . . ✨ This pattern covers every reason to cast on with just one or two skeins—stash-busting, testing out a new base, or simply treating yourself. Plus it uses my favorite stitch pattern ever. (If you’ve been around for a while, you know the one. 😘) Stay tuned, and be sure to subscribe to my newsletter for an exclusive treat on release day! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #stashbuster #stashbusting #knittingpatterns #indiedyedyarn #vanessasmithdesigns by @vanessasmithdesigns
16 years ago this week, I launched what is now Vanessa Smith Designs. 🥳 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, I’ve released 40 patterns ranging from accessories to sweaters, connected with an incredible community of knitters, and learned more about math and spreadsheets than I ever expected to need! I’m still just as excited about new projects as I was on day one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To celebrate, take 30% off all my self-published patterns now through Sunday, June 14, with code happy16years. Works at checkout on my website, Ravelry, or Etsy, all linked in my bio. If there’s something sitting in your queue from my collection, now is a good time to grab it. ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Which pattern is calling your name? Pinch to zoom for a closer look on the grid, and let me know which one you’re grabbing next! 💜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #knittingpatterns #knitpatterns #indiedesigner #knittingcommunity by @vanessasmithdesigns
Exciting news, y’all! My dream of teaching @flockfiberfestival is coming true this year! 🥳 I’ll be teaching two classes all about short rows on Sunday, August 2. Each class stands alone or can be taken back-to-back. The first class will focus on short-row foundations, and the second will dive into the math behind short-row shaping in the context of sweater construction and fit. Class descriptions are linked in my bio. Spots are going fast, so check them out if you’re interested! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can’t wait to see you in class or around the marketplace!! 🥰 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #vanessasmithdesigns #shortrows #flockfiberfestival #flockfiberfestival2026 #diversknitty #knittersofinstagram #knittersofig by @vanessasmithdesigns
