“That fear is a kind of magic” 🍁🧡👻#CaughtReading I went to the bookstore seeking Halloween vibes. I bought #TheSaturdayNightGhostClub by Craig Davidson, a Canadian, thinking it was a supernatural tale, but it was more of a coming of age story. (I’m okay with that.) Think Stand By Me, The Outsiders and Goonies-esque. Perhaps the best takeaway was that it conjured up nostalgic memories of summers fooling with Ouija boards and hanging out at Sam’s Place, a local pool/pinball hangout. It’s a pity current big city replacements lack the lustre of the 80s old-school meetups. It also references iconic culture: “kids took to their basements…[watching] reruns of Beachcombers and Danger Bay on the CBC…[reading] Archie comics on sofas.” Must ask the students if these comics are popular anymore? I digress… 🙃 the novel is a retrospective told through the eyes of Jake who is navigating a bully, new friendships, and a first crush. It starts out with the 12-year-old joining his uncle’s ghost hunting club. As they explore haunted sites around Niagara Falls, the backstory deepens. I wouldn’t call ending a twist, more of a curve that weaves the story together satisfyingly. I shy away from publicly rating novels, as personal tastes differ. (If you really want to know, it’s an A for me, mainly due to the writing style and throwback feels. The tension may not be present for someone who prefers thrillers.) Well now, I found a new style of presentation— the seamless carousel — and experimenting with that. It reminds me of my scrapbooking days. I’m a little rusty though… if only I could figure out how to put a border around videos?! Had a fun trek around Lester’s Farm with this crew! Thanks in alphabetical order 😂 because it’s not fair to put one in front of the other: @mandybuffett @mascotnl @neil_nova You all deserve first place in the pumpkin posing department. 🎃😝 by @vccalloway

“Then I’d wish dat you was free like me.” #CaughtReading #James by Percival Everett 📖🧡🛶 I loved teaching The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn at Bishops. It was a perfect way to introduce ethics. I remember talking about following your moral compass, just as Huck does. 🧭 If you’ve read and enjoyed Huck Finn, you should consider reading this novel from Jim’s perspective. There’s a little twist of sorts, which further enhances the writer’s voice. ♥️ I’m about half way and loving it; not surprising since it was the 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner. Had a few marvellous days in the Bonavista area with friends. Plenty of puffins, sheep, horses, and whales! 🐧🐑🐴🐋🩵 Thanks to my phenomenal friends for once again being promoted to unpaid freelance photographers! 📸😝 by @vccalloway
Sunshine, paddle, laughs, repeat ☀️💦💛 Good for the soul weekend catch-up with Lynn and Gina Our reunion was at the cabin we played cards and listened to Air Supply until 2 am in our teens. It was as if no time had passed… except it’s been over 30 years! 😳 Did we know how lucky we were? @ginarideout made good on the promise to join me at the pond. 💖 @lynncheesie thanks for squeezing me in. ♥️ You continue to impress me with your many talents — wedding officiating, cod jigging, is there anything you can’t do?! ✨💛 Music: Glide — Neiked & Portugal. The Man Disfruto — Carla Morrison (might not understand it, but it sure stirs the soul) Night Changes — House of Paper (apparently a One direction song?!) 💘 by @vccalloway
More of this, pretty please 🏖️💦☀️ (And less fly swatting 😝) So happy to share the first paddle of summer with @lynncheesie on June 28th. In our youth, we spent most of our summer at the pond. The daily apres supper swim was a fave. I cherish our mini reunions! 💖✨ This little cove on the pond deserves a name. Our Cove? Peace Cove? Open to suggestions… 🏖️🩵💦 by @vccalloway
“…the path to illumination — starts with you.” #caughtreading There are many takeaways from #Guided by Laura Lynne Jackson. I’m not quite finished, but already I’m sending out little missives to the universe. Plus, I’m planning on shedding my socks this summer and walking barefoot on the grass! 👣 💚 Jackson shares fascinating studies and anecdotal evidence strengthening the idea that everything is connected, and it doesn’t end when we die. It’s also a way to cope with grief, regret, and other dampening emotions. If you’re willing to approach life with an open lens, this is a book for you. 🌷My first tulip u-pick🌷 I’m thankful to farmers who try risky, but hopefully, rewarding ventures. Perhaps you’ll get the opportunity to enjoy tulips or wildflowers soon.💐 A BIG shoutout to my cherished friends who, thankfully, know their way around an iPhone camera — such talent. Bless you! 💖✨ @mandybuffett & @mascotnl 🌷💚 by @vccalloway
little May 2-4 fever brewing 🏍️🕴️❤️‍🔥 little bestie bike ride ♥️🖤💙 “From the sublime to the ridiculous there is but…” a jump! If you are wondering: Yes — we actually rode the bikes! (To the pond, the trussel {trestle🙄}, Pitt’s Pond, across the farm, through a magical pine tree path…) No — the dust didn’t bother us thanks to the rainy Friday. (Pre-pavement and in our teens, we’d wash hair three times daily on May 24ths) Yes — almost peeing in pants due to pic shenanigans. No — the 4 police cars around town on Saturday did not attempt to pull us over. (We don’t pop wheelies at pedestrians; we’ve outgrown our wheelie popping days) Yes — we recommend you join our dirt bike club. No — we don’t plan on growing up anytime soon. 🏍️❤️‍🔥 by @vccalloway
#CaughtReading “…the black and whites, the colour prints,/ everyone so much younger. The Polaroids.” 🤍🩵 ~From Margaret Atwood’s poem, “Dearly” (and the book’s title) April is poetry month. An advantage of reading poetry is lower time commitment. I’ll use whatever I can to sell it to students. 😜 Think I’d lose them if I said, it spurs a deeper dive into the reefs, tunnels, or trenches of your mind. (dare I say, shipwrecks?! 🫣) Gibbets Hill is a quick (but windy!) hike if you’re pressed for time. Just like reading a poem…😉 This footage: last weekend; when we were fooled by spring’s potential. 🪻❄️🙃 #MargaretAtwood #Dearly #coloursinmyhead 🖤🤍❤️‍🔥 by @vccalloway
Lingering winter perk ⛷️🤍 Making the most of winter’s last whisper with no clear sign of spring past the Avalon. With his lift pass flapping in the wind, Ethan likes to go straight down the hill! (Me, not so much… 😝) Annddd, anyone lose a bra? 🤣 #easterbreak #whitehills #iloveithere ❄️🩵🎿 by @vccalloway
If I’m lost, find me on Mills Siding 🌲⛷️❤️‍🔥 The trail post said marginal, but it was perfect. I do love a trail that feels like being in the middle of nowhere. It reminds me of skidooing as a youth on Lily Brook Trail, which was about 6 feet wide and is now a two-lane road through my hometown. As teens, we swatted at overhead tree branches sprinkling snow on the driver behind us. What fun! @lynncheesie & @neil_nova A favourite childhood memory. 🤍 Going to a movie by myself was once on my bucket list. (Not sure why — perhaps the independence of it all.) I replaced it with going skiing by myself for the first time. I felt all grown up! 😝 Music: Slides 2-5: In the End — Tommee Profitt & Fleurie Slides 6-9: Society — Eddie Vedder The trail’s closed now, but just you wait for next season or next weekend, depending on the weather… #whitehills #iloveithere #woodlandviews 🌲🎿❤️ by @vccalloway
#CaughtReading “That’s my train. Again.” 🚆🖤📖 The characters of #TomorrowAndTomorrowAndTomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin reunite at a subway, and the novel takes off from there. The premise (thus far) revolves around gaming design. It brings me back to Atari and the 80s arcade games at Sam’s Place.* Do you find the fascination with gaming and world building curious? Some people are fully onboard with online games. (in keeping with the train metaphor😝) The genre is characterized as contemporary literary fiction, but it definitely has romance vibes. The writing style is playful and engaging. I’m only on page 70, but so far so good…! *Fun fact: If I may flex, I held the world’s top score in Megalomania for one day. Never heard of it? Requires so much skill it wasn’t popular. 😉😂 ~Non-commercial break~ Thank you to @mascotnl for being the best videographer in the whole wide world! I can’t thank you enough. You rock. ❣️ What am I doing at a fabric store? Buying fabric, of course. I bought a sewing machine after seeing reels of cool upcycled clothing. And when I see something, anything I like, I think — to my future detriment — could I do that??! 😂 #mydownfall You wouldn’t believe the variety of fabric and prints available. (Maybe you would after seeing this, but that was just the tip of the material iceberg.) It’s a little overwhelming. I can’t wait to try my newfound talents on a hoodie… if you see me wearing a three-sleeved sweater, you won’t judge, right? I’m going the YouTube tutorial route so anything’s possible.😂 But I’m not going alone; I hope to drag my friends down the upcycled rabbit hole with me… Bits & Bites fabric! Say wha?! There’s a fabric for every taste imaginable. #punintended #funwithbooks Yikes, way too longggg! 🧵❤️📖 by @vccalloway
