Service vs. Perception … a curious encounter on the train…

Today, while traveling from Kochi to Kozhikode by train, I witnessed something intriguing.
A railway employee entered our compartment with a broomstick. In just 2-3 minutes, he gave the area a quick sweep—not thorough, but enough to say it was “done.”

What followed was even more interesting.
He began distributing feedback forms to passengers, patiently explaining how to fill them out and insisting on getting responses.
For nearly 40 minutes, he diligently collected as many feedback forms as possible.

It struck me—this employee will probably have a stellar report compared to his colleagues who focus solely on actual cleaning without prioritizing reviews.

Isn’t it ironic? In today’s world, the emphasis often shifts from genuine service to how well it’s perceived. The real work gets overshadowed by the pursuit of glowing feedback.

This little episode left me wondering: Have we reached a point where it’s more important to appear effective than to actually be effective? Maybe it’s time to rethink how we measure success—not just by reviews, but by the impact we truly create.

What do you think? Is perception overrated? by @shameena_vineeth
