A next-generation music visualizer | Building with love in Nashville, TN 🎙️ | No AI used in visuals ✨| Demo for PC available on Steam now!

What if the sound you create could reveal its own visual language?

This sound was created in Bitwig Poly Grid using a simple FM patch — but with one important twist: the pitch of the modulator and the amount of FM modulation are being modulated simultaneously.

The result is a constantly shifting spectrum of frequencies and harmonics.

Then @vibralizer takes that sound and interprets its spectral information, transforming those frequency movements into an advanced, evolving spectrogram.

🎧 You create the sound.
👁️ Vibralizer reveals what it looks like.

If you could actually see the sound… this is what it might look like.

A birdsong scientist and a game developer fell in love, went to a lot of festivals, and built the music visualizer they wished existed.

We’re Kate (@katesnyderphd) and Nick (@nrpettit), the two-person team behind Vibralizer.

Kate spent years studying how birds learn and transmit song across generations. She also has hearing loss, and she wanted to see music the way she’d learned to analyze birdsong: as frequency spectrums, not just pulses of sound. Nick builds video games that call for robust systems engineering and sophisticated graphics. Turns out that’s the exact set of skills needed to build an application that can work as effortlessly as the music visualizers we grew up with, but built for the streaming age.

So we made Vibralizer: hand-crafted, audio-reactive visuals for streaming and live music. Every Vibe is built by humans. Intelligent, not artificial.

Follow along as we build. Vibralizer is on Steam and itch.io now, link in bio. 🔗 taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @aliennoiseacademy

The lineup for Astronox (@astronoxevents) has some of the DJs and VJs we admire most, so we’re incredibly honored and excited to be bringing Vibralizer and opening a portal to the audio-reactive dimension. It gets weirder all 4 nights of the fest so follow to see what happens!

We’re bringing Vibralizer to Astronox music festival in Texas!

For Astronox we built “The 4th Wall”, a minutage that unfolds over the four nights of the festival. On a circular screen, a familiar-feeling domestic space sets expectations that are subverted with increasing surrealism every night. Follow to see just how weird it gets. 🐠👀✨

We went to Iceland Eclipse Festival hoping to catch a total solar eclipse. Instead, thanks to some Icelandic weather, we only caught a brief glimpse of the sun a half hour after totality.

It was all good though. We had the BEST and most inspirational time being on a far-flung peninsula in Iceland, building a venue-within-a-festival with other artists, scientists, and even astronauts as part of @theportal.iceland , and letting folks play with Vibralizer using flight controls and foot pedals. We slept in a tent for most of three weeks and woke up next to Snaefellsjökull (a stunningly beautiful glacier-topped volcano) during the festival. We channeled our experience into this new update to Vibralizer, v0.6 - “The Eclipse Update.”

We hope you love our new Vibe, “Peaks” - a 3D, mirrored spectrogram made to look like mountains emerging from molten earth. Wishlist or get it for macOS and Windows on Steam.

It’s always so interesting to see mammal vocalizations at such lower frequencies than songbirds, even when they sound so high-pitched. This spectrogram shows the frequency axis on a linear scale, so the fundamental frequencies of most voiced human phonemes would be heavily weighted towards the bottom of the graph between about 100-250Hz. The linear scale is great for showing the range of birdsong, though; Pippin’s song spans about 1000Hz to over 4000Hz. His begging call is lower, closer to the human vocal range.

Even though Bug is so small and her mew sounds so high pitched, it’s only about 1000Hz. 🥹 by @aliennoiseacademy
