**Rembrandt meets de Kooning. Three centuries apart. One obsession: paint. 🎨** What happens when the raw energy of Abstract Expressionism enters the world of the Dutch Old Masters? A century after leaving the Netherlands for America, **Willem de Kooning returns to Amsterdam** in a spectacular exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. His iconic *Woman I* and *Woman and Bicycle* now hang opposite Rembrandt’s masterpieces — an unexpected encounter between two revolutionary painters. Featuring more than **120 paintings, drawings and sculptures**, *Willem de Kooning at Work* explores nearly seven decades of artistic experimentation. From his early years in Rotterdam to the explosive *Women* paintings, sculptural experiments and strikingly simplified late works, de Kooning never stopped reinventing his artistic language. **Was he an American Abstract Expressionist or a Dutch master at heart?** In her fascinating new article for Vickery Art, **Alexandra Kharitonova** explores the artist’s extraordinary career, his European influences and his lifelong struggle between figuration and abstraction. Why couldn’t Cézanne let go of Harlequin? This November, one of Cézanne’s rare portraits of his son dressed as Harlequin comes to auction in New York. But what made this mysterious, shape-shifting figure so compelling to Cézanne — and to artists from Watteau to Picasso? In a fascinating new essay for Vickery Art, acclaimed Russian art historian and critic **Sergey Khachaturov** traces Harlequin’s extraordinary journey from commedia dell’arte to modern art. At its heart is an unexpected parallel with **Proteus**, the shape-shifting god of antiquity. Harlequin can never be fixed. He improvises, transforms and continually escapes definition — much like art itself. For Khachaturov, this is precisely what makes him such a powerful figure for understanding Cézanne’s own struggle with form. **Harlequin, Proteus and the Art of Transformation** — read Sergey Khachaturov’s full essay at Vickery.art. #PaulCezanne #Cezanne #Harlequin #SergeyKhachaturov #ArtHistory #ModernArt #Picasso #Watteau #RussianAvantGarde #ArtCollectors #VickeryArt #VickeryArtCollections by @vickery_art
More art buyers than ever. But are we creating collectors? Global wealth has expanded, the art market has become increasingly international, and collectors around the world are often exposed to the same artists, galleries and trends. But what happens to curiosity? The great collectors developed their eye over time — looking, learning, making mistakes and discovering works they never expected to love. Today, technology increasingly gives us more of what we already know we like. **Algorithms refine preference; connoisseurship expands it.** In our latest article, **Jo Vickery** asks whether the challenge for the art world today is not simply to find new buyers, but to turn those buyers into collectors — people willing to look beyond trophy names, explore unfashionable fields and develop the confidence to recognise quality for themselves. What a way to kick off a new art season at the National Gallery in Athens, a very special event to celebrate the Costakis Collection at MOMus. Excited to hear about two developments: a new study and research centre where some 45,000 volumes including the Bowlt and Misler library and archive will be accessible to researchers in this field, and a new home for the Costakis Collection in Thessaloniki which is being designed by Foster + Partners. A massive thanks to Victoria Yanakova for bringing such a warm group together for this memorable evening. by @vickery_art
**Can one of the great collections of the Russian avant-garde still surprise us?** George Costakis is celebrated as the collector who helped preserve an extraordinary chapter of twentieth-century art. But two exhibitions in Greece are asking us to look at his legacy differently. In Athens, **The Avant-Garde World: City, Nature, Universe, Human** explores the Costakis Collection through strikingly contemporary questions of technology, nature, the city and humanity’s place in the world — while also reconsidering the cultural and geographical diversity behind the term “Russian avant-garde”. In Thessaloniki, **Behind the Doors: Costakis Meets Rubinstein** brings Costakis into dialogue with fellow collector Yakov Rubinstein for the first time, revealing two very different collecting visions formed within the same Soviet world. **Jo Vickery** explores how both exhibitions are recontextualising Costakis and the art he championed. **They didn’t just enter the art world. They changed it.** From Maria Bashkirtseva fighting for professional recognition in the 19th century to Natalia Goncharova, Alexandra Exter and Liubov Popova helping revolutionise modern art, women played a remarkable role in shaping Russian art. Within just a few decades, they moved from seeking access to artistic education and institutions to standing at the heart of the avant-garde — challenging painting itself and taking art into theatre, textiles, design and everyday life. Our latest article by **Angie Afifi** explores this extraordinary journey through Bashkirtseva, Maria Yakunchikova, Zinaida Serebriakova, Goncharova, Exter, Popova, Varvara Stepanova and Lydia Masterkova. These women were not exceptions to the story of Russian art. **They helped determine its direction.** Read **The Women Who Shaped Russian Art** at Vickery.art. #WomenArtists #WomenInArt #RussianArt #RussianAvantGarde #ArtHistory #ModernArt #NataliaGoncharova #AlexandraExter #LiubovPopova #VickeryArt #VickeryArtCollections by @vickery_art
**What does a £5 million gift to the Bayeux Tapestry tell us about the changing face of cultural philanthropy?** Igor Tulchinsky’s support for the British Museum’s blockbuster exhibition is the latest example of a small but striking group of major cultural philanthropists with roots in the former Soviet Union. In our latest article, **Jo Vickery** looks at Leonard Blavatnik, Anastasia and Igor Bukhman, Dmitri and Daria Bukhman, and Igor Tulchinsky — and asks whether they represent a new chapter in the relationship between international private wealth and Western culture. At a time when politics is becoming increasingly inward-looking, their support for museums, contemporary art, curatorial opportunities and literature raises a fascinating question: **can philanthropy help keep culture looking outward?** Read **The Rich Tapestry of Life** at Vickery.art. #CulturalPhilanthropy #BayeuxTapestry #BritishMuseum #Museums #ArtCollectors #CulturalDiplomacy #ArtWorld #VickeryArt #VickeryArtCollections by @vickery_art
**Want to know a painting’s secrets? Turn it around.** The back of a painting can reveal a history hidden from view. Museum labels, collectors’ seals, auction numbers, customs stamps, handwritten inscriptions and even frame-makers’ marks can help establish where a work has travelled, who owned it — and sometimes provide vital clues to its authenticity. In our latest article, Berlin-based art specialist **Marina Khaykina** explores the fascinating detective work of reading the reverse of a painting. Because sometimes the most revealing part of a work of art is the side nobody looks at. Are we really seeing the colours the artist intended? Paintings are never truly static. Pigments fade, varnishes yellow, colours shift and details can disappear — sometimes fundamentally changing how we experience a work. From Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring to Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Munch’s The Scream, our latest article explores the fascinating second life of paintings: the one written by materials, chemistry and time. Where does emotion go when an artist refuses to show it? Behind the quiet interiors and solitary women of Gwen John’s paintings was a life of extraordinary emotional intensity. In our latest article, Jo Vickery visits Strange Beauties at the National Galleries of Scotland and asks whether that turbulence is really absent from the paintings — or simply transformed into restraint, repetition and an almost meditative concentration. In her latest auction round-up for Vickery Art, Aleksandra Todorovic explores two extraordinary paintings that demonstrate why the Russian avant-garde was not a footnote to European modernism, but one of its driving forces: Kazimir Malevich’s Head of a Peasant (1911), from the Joe Lewis Collection, and Mikhail Larionov’s Head of a Soldier(1910), offered from a distinguished private Swiss collection. Although separated by provenance, both paintings share a common artistic moment. Exhibited in the legendary Donkey’s Tail exhibition in Moscow in 1912, they reveal how the Russian avant-garde helped redefine the possibilities of modern art in the years before the First World War. Rather than occupying the margins of European culture, Malevich and Larionov stood among its great innovators. While many Western artists looked to Africa and the classical world for inspiration, Russian modernists turned to icons, folk traditions and peasant life, forging a new visual language rooted in their own cultural inheritance. Engaging with Cubism, Fauvism and Expressionism as equals rather than imitators, they transformed portraiture into something more universal: archetypes of identity, labour and modern existence itself. Alongside works by Klimt, Modigliani, Picasso, Magritte, Bacon and Freud, these extraordinary paintings remind us that the history of modern portraiture—and of European modernism and post-modernism more broadly—cannot be understood without the contribution of the Russian avant-garde. New York never disappoints. The city feels electric this week as the art world descends for the major auctions, with Christie’s alone unleashing a remarkable wave of blue-chip masterpieces onto the market and achieving over a billion dollars in sales. Walking through the auction galleries with part of the Vickery Art team has felt less like visiting a commercial space and more like wandering through a private museum — extraordinary works at every turn. Auction week is truly one of the greatest times of the year to be in New York. #NewYorkArtWeek #AuctionWeek #ArtMarket #ContemporaryArt #VickeryArt by @vickery_art
