Your old sarees may need a wash, not a dry cleaner!

Pavithra Muddaya of Vimor explains how simple home-washing methods can help preserve your sarees, why you should be careful with colour bleeding, and how harsh dry cleaning can weaken the fabric.

A trailblazer for Karnataka’s craft heritage

Born in Madikeri in 1928, Chimy Nanjappa transformed the Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium in Bengaluru into a vibrant showcase of Karnataka’s traditional crafts from Bidriware to Channapatna toys. Despite starting with no background in textiles, she championed artisans and preserved fading craft traditions.

Her passion for textiles continues through the Vimor Museum of Living Textiles, where rare sareea, some over a century old tell stories of India’s rich weaving heritage.

A woman ahead of her time, Chimy even hosted global dignitaries, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and a young Queen Elizabeth, while leading the emporium. Her legacy remains a powerful reminder of how one person can shape cultural history.

When India’s fashion guru @prasad_bidapa asked me to be a showstopper at his show — was there a way to say no???

Part of @blrhubba the show was presented by Prasad and curated by veteran handloom designer Pavithra Muddaya. An honour to be draped by two icons of India’s fashion and textile world.

The saree I wore was recreated by Pavithra from an heirloom that belonged to her aunt, Mrs. Kitty Devvayya. Originally a Benaras weave, she brought it to life again in Kanchipuram, blending silver and gold buttas and creating a pallu sized just right for the Kodava drape.

Ramp walk attempts aside, it was such good fun.

Thank you, Prasad, for the invitation.
