motherland

most of you can relate when I say growing up in a country as a child of immigrants isn’t easy. my home was always montenegro but i mostly visited during summer so the way i experienced my home was always shifted.
i only cared for the long beach days, melted ice cream and playing with my cousins and friends till our parents yelled for us to finally go to sleep. now going back as an adult my experience has shifted again.
i see the people who make my home.
i see the old hands who still sell the same fruits on the same corner because money never came otherwise. i see the people still sitting together, drinking dark coffee, smoking, complaining about the latest doctor appointment where they still didn’t got their diagnosis because recourses are limited. i hear the same laughter coming from children that remind me of who my sister and i once were. i see people walking along the beach with an ease that makes you forget that life was probably anything but easy, but you can’t take away their kindness, no war ever could.

i used to think montenegro was the place I came back to every summer.

now i think it was the people.

the people who stayed while everything changed around them. the people whose lives i was too young to understand, whose laughter i remember without remembering what came before it.

maybe that’s what growing up does. you rerun to the same streets and suddenly realise they were never as simple as you thought.

and maybe home is not a place you remember, maybe it is everything you were too young to notice.
