Hello, world!
I'm a painter, graphic designer, and character illustrator.
If you need something painted, let me know!

POSTS STORIES REELS

Plein-air painting at the beginning of Lightbox Expo is a great way to start a convention full of artists! Look at all these other painters out there behind my sketchbook. Have you ever seen such a large gathering of paint in one spot before? All of us a conduit to channel the beauty of Pasadena!

I made it to Lightbox Expo again! Everything about this yearly trip is what gives me the fuel to push forward. In the darkest times when I doubt myself I need this to show me the light within. No fate, but that of which we make, noble as the oath we undertake! We are the great Starlight Brigade! The doors are always open to welcome more light to @lightboxexpo

This was made for @bucciblog 's quarterly challenge, complete a full comic page. I chose to snap a shot from a hypothetical @theprotomen comic, set in the universe of their incredible rock opera about Mega Man. This little snippit is a head-canon of mine, that "The Girl" who remains unnamed throughout the third act is actually named "Emily." The significance of this will be made apparent to anyone who reads the notes and listens to Act II: The Father of Death by The Protomen. Their music and their story is amazing! The best way to describe it is, um... Sci-fi, western, cyberpunk, noir, synth rock. 🤣😵🤖

I tried to give this page the look of some old-school comics, back when they used variations of gray tones and halftone stickers to shade. What do you think? Does it look like something you would find in an indie comic store during the 80s?

Miyazaki famously makes watercolor concept pages, often times before he even has a plot in mind. He thinks of a cool image and just makes it. Then afterward, he makes the plot.

He grows it like a tree branching out in all directions, and sometimes has no clue how the story begins or even ends. This is the way we used to write stories as children. We weren't concerned with how it started or how it will end. We branched it outwards from a cool idea.

If I can channel even 10% of his creativity by mimicking his footsteps, I'm gonna do it. Here is a watercolor + pen work of my son's favorite movie ever - Ponyo.

Yes, it's another samurai. Or technically a Ronin (masterless samurai). I seem to have a "type" lol! This is just a small preview of the full character page, but I am so happy with how I captured this particular style that I couldn't wait to share it! This is also the first time I tried to draw and paint a cartoon-ish middle-aged man. I need to break my habit of drawing only young men...

Happy birthday from the future, you blue blur! From your friend through time, Silver the Hedgehog.

Go and make a good future!

(Can the way past cool dudes catch the references in the image? Here's a hint: Look at the numbers on the results screen!)

If you haven't watched Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, YOU SHOULD! Groundbreaking soundtrack, wonderfully written characters with meaningful character growth, surprisingly detailed action sequences, and a story that gives you the warm fuzzies with the power of friendship!

This character doesn't technically have a name. She had no parents and was raised by mutant wolves. So they call her "Wolf," or "Wolfatha Christie the IV" by Kipo who said she needed a longer name for emphasis, 😂! A feral child by nature, who learns over the course of the show that what she needed most was a pack of her own. She is normally calm and decisive, but if she flips the "wolf" switch, get ready to FACE THE BEAST!

I've been studying the topic that forces all novice artists to draw their OCs with pockets. The dreaded, looming mountain that is HANDS! Any beginner (and advanced) artist will tell you drawing hands is the most difficult subject you can draw on a person. More expressive than a face, and more complex than all other limbs combined.

These are master studies I am doing straight out of The Book of a Hundred Hands by George Bridgman. If I were to help guide a new artist into drawing hands I WOULD NOT recommend this book! 😂😐😭 Bridgman's anatomy explanations border on medical diagrams, and get overwhelming really quickly! But I am jumping in the deep end with cautious confidence as I tackle this beast of a book. Wish me luck!

My next illustration for Edguary. Meta Knight from the Kirby series. The true animation connoisseurs out there should recognize the background instantly! I had to redesign it to fit in Instagram's aspect ratio, but I think the attempt was successful.

You wouldn't expect a game like Kirby, a game that has a little pink puffball who collects stars and candy, to have such an edgy character in it. But that is what I really like about the Kirby games! They go big on the contrasting elements. One level is a sunny, beautiful beach side paradise, and the next is a ruined convenience store with a grey palette that looks like it belongs in The Walking Dead. It speaks to my extremes in taste, like how I will play Animal Crossing in the morning then finish the day off playing Doom Eternal.

You thought I forgot about Edguary, but I was just waiting for @bucciblog 's critique before I posted my illustration! Edguary is that special time of year I reserve for the edgy characters in media. The anti-heroes, the heel-turns, the gritty heroes with a dark past...

This week is late, but still here! Katsuki Bakugo, or Kacchan as affectionately named by Midoriya in My Hero Academia. His power is to... um... EXPLODE! Try finding out how to save people with THAT super power, lol! The dog I added. He doesn't have a dog in the show. But if he did, it would be a sassy chihuahua. Small dog with an explosive attitude! They're two of a kind!

I love it when I can apply my work to something that can be held in your hand. Digital painting means my gallery sits behind a screen, but when I get the opportunity to make something with it I take it!

These are the D&D portraits I painted, printed out onto character tokens for use on combat grids for encounters and puzzles during a session. I bought a pack of 1 inch plastic circles just for this occasion, and plan on making more in the future!
