Women have always been at the heart of agriculture. It’s time their stories take centre stage. From nurturing seeds and restoring soil health to managing livestock, adopting new technologies and building farm-based enterprises, women farmers are shaping the future of agriculture and rural livelihoods. On the occasion of the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF) 2026, we are proud to present Stories of Change, a compendium featuring 10 stories of women farmers from six states. Spanning generations and diverse farming systems, these stories celebrate their knowledge, resilience, enterprise and leadership. These women are not just participating in agriculture. They are making decisions, creating opportunities and strengthening farms, families and local economies. From Four Sheep to Thirty: Devi’s Journey For 38-year-old M.C. Devi, supporting a family of eight was never easy. With one acre of rainfed land, four sheep and irregular daily wage work, her family’s annual income was around ₹40,000. Things began to change when she joined Yallampalli FPCL and its Self-Help Group in February 2021. Through training and support from Vrutti and the FPCL, Devi learned improved farming practices, sheep rearing and financial management. With a ₹30,000 livelihood loan, she bought additional sheep and gradually built her flock. Today, she owns 30 Deccani sheep, up from just four. She has also increased her maize yield from 18 to 28 quintals per acre. Her annual household income has grown from ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh. She has saved nearly ₹80,000, cleared her debts, renovated her home and invested in her children’s education. Her progress is also inspiring others. Neighbouring farmers and Self-Help Group members now turn to Devi for advice on sheep rearing. With a more secure livelihood, she hopes to expand her flock to 60 sheep. From struggling to meet household expenses to guiding other farmers, Devi’s journey shows how the right support and a new livelihood can help a family move forward. #internationalyearofwomenfarmer #IYWF #IYWF2026 #WomenFarmers #SheepRearing #FarmerLivelihoods #FPO #SelfHelpGroups #RuralLivelihoods #LivestockDevelopment #FinancialInclusion #WomenEmpowerment #Vrutti #CommunityLedDevelopment by @vrutti_lh
From “Can I do this?” to “I can build this.” Every enterprise begins with a first step. Sometimes, it begins with a simple belief: “Maybe I can.” Through the partnership between @oracle and Vrutti, women across Puri, Yadgiri, Theni, and Pudukkottai are turning that belief into action. A petty shop becoming a stronger enterprise. A familiar skill becoming a source of income. A home-based idea taking shape as a business. Better cattle-rearing practices creating new possibilities. These journeys may look different, but each one is powered by learning, confidence, informed choices and the courage to take the next step. Vrutti works alongside women to build this pathway—bringing together sustained engagement, capacity building and enterprise support to help aspirations move closer to reality. Because livelihood transformation is not just about earning more. It is about confidence. Choice. Agency. And the power to shape one’s own future. When belief takes root, possibilities begin to grow. @oraclecareers #Vrutti #Oracle #WomenEntrepreneurs #RuralLivelihoods #WomenEconomicEmpowerment #LivelihoodDevelopment #MicroEnterprise #Entrepreneurship #FinancialInclusion #WomenInBusiness #SustainableLivelihoods #SkillDevelopment by @vrutti_lh
From Rainfed Farming to a Steady Income For Surekha Khurkute, farming on her family’s four acres of rainfed land meant depending on the monsoon. Her family grew paddy and other cereals, with a small jasmine plantation bringing in some additional income. But unpredictable rainfall and low farm returns meant their annual household income was around ₹36,000. Things began to change when Surekha started attending Farmer Producer Group meetings and livelihood training supported by Vrutti. That was where she was introduced to poultry farming, something she had never considered before. With a ₹20,000 livelihood loan and training in poultry management, feeding and disease prevention, Surekha started her first batch using the locally suitable Sonalika breed. Her first batch brought in ₹50,000 in gross income and ₹45,000 net. The second batch increased the gross income to ₹70,000. Poultry has given her family an income that does not depend entirely on the monsoon. The additional income has helped with food, savings and unexpected expenses, while reducing financial stress. Surekha has also become more involved in household financial decisions and FPG activities. Today, she encourages other women in her community to consider livelihood opportunities of their own. A new livelihood changed more than her income. It gave Surekha a bigger role in her family and community. #Vrutti #WomenFarmers #WomenEntrepreneurs #FarmerProducerGroup #PoultryFarming #Livelihoods #RuralLivelihoods #WomenEmpowerment #FinancialInclusion #CommunityLedDevelopment #Maharashtra by @vrutti_lh
One Seed, A New Possibility When Malarkodi, a smallholder farmer from Kuppakudi village in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, received one kilogram of Brown Cotton seed, she had never grown cotton before. She usually cultivated black gram and groundnut. With support from Vrutti and her FPO, she decided to try something different. She received practical guidance on land preparation, sowing, nutrient and pest management, and harvesting. Malarkodi planted Brown Cotton on 60 cents of her land, becoming the first and only farmer in the project area to grow the crop. Five months later, she harvested 200 kg of Brown Cotton, with an investment of around ₹6,400. With favourable market prices, she expects the crop could earn up to ₹80,000. What started as a new experiment for Malarkodi is now helping other farmers learn. Farmers from nearby fields visit her farm, ask questions and see for themselves how Brown Cotton grows. They are learning about the crop, its management, yield and market possibilities. Malarkodi’s experience is giving other farmers the confidence to consider trying something new. One farmer tried a new crop. Her experience is now helping other farmers make informed choices. #Vrutti #FarmerLivelihoods #WomenFarmers #FPO #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience #TamilNadu #Pudukkottai #CottonFarming #RuralLivelihoods #FarmerToFarmer #CommunityLearning by @vrutti_lh
A New Direction for Parwati Bai’s Farm For 45-year-old Parwati Bai Santosh of Mangaltarai, Chhattisgarh, farming meant growing paddy, collecting forest produce and taking up wage work to support her family. Accessing quality seeds and fertilisers was difficult. She travelled nearly 25 km to buy farm inputs, adding to her time and costs. After joining the Balod Hareli FPO in May 2025, things began to change. Through Vrutti’s 3Fold Services, Parwati Bai received guidance on seed selection, nursery management, SRI and improved farming practices. She shifted from broadcasting to nursery raising and transplantation, helping improve her paddy production. The FPO also brought farm inputs closer to her and connected her to better markets. She now sells paddy, tamarind and mahua directly from her village, reducing dependence on local traders. Her annual income has grown from ₹1.45 lakh to ₹1.78 lakh. Now, Parwati Bai is looking ahead—with a goal of reaching ₹3 lakh in annual family income within five years. Better access. Better knowledge. New possibilities. These small changes helped her understand her business better and improve her margins. Today, she is planning to invest ₹3 lakh to expand her stock and renovate her shop, with a goal of reaching ₹10,000 in daily sales. From running a small shop to planning its next chapter, Kasturi is building a business with a bigger vision. 🔗 Read her story: https://vruttiimpactcatalysts.org/nrlm-water-secure-villages Visit to learn more about us and our work : https://vruttiimpactcatalysts.org #Vrutti #SmallBusinesses #WomenEntrepreneurs #MicroRetailers #Livelihoods #EnterpriseDevelopment by @vrutti_lh
From an Abandoned Acre to a Productive Farm For years, Venkatamma’s one-acre plot in Rechinayakanahalli lay unused. Dense bushes had taken over. Boulders covered parts of the land, the terrain was uneven, and years of neglect had made cultivation almost impossible. For Venkatamma, an acre of land had become an opportunity she could no longer use. That began to change through the Soil and Water Conservation Project implemented by Vrutti. Working with the Rechinayakanahalli Water Management Committee (WMC), the land was assessed to understand what could be done to bring it back into cultivation. And the restoration was not just about machines and earthwork. The community took an active role throughout the process—mobilising farmer contributions, overseeing the work and ensuring transparency. Shrubs and bushes were cleared. Boulders were removed. The uneven land was levelled using JCB machinery. Step by step, the abandoned plot was brought back to life. Today, Venkatamma is cultivating maize and tomato on the restored acre. The current crop is expected to produce nearly 3,000 kg, with an estimated income of ₹1.05 lakh and a projected net profit of ₹46,675. What was once an uncultivable piece of land is now back in production—creating a new opportunity for Venkatamma and showing what can happen when communities come together to restore their natural resources. One acre restored. One farm back in production. One more livelihood opportunity created. Key highlights • 1 acre of fallow land restored • Maize and tomato cultivation established • Improved land productivity and reduced soil erosion • Strong community ownership through the Water Management Committee #Vrutti #Livelihoods #SoilAndWaterConservation #WaterManagement #CommunityLedDevelopment #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture #FarmerLivelihoods #LandRestoration #RuralDevelopment #RegenerativeAgriculture #CommunityAction #AgricultureForChange by @vrutti_lh
Building Climate-Resilient Communities Through Water-Secure Villages Water security is closely connected to food, livelihoods, incomes and the ability of rural communities to cope with an uncertain climate. In his latest blog, Jitendra Rai, Project Co-Lead – NRM Projects, explores how restoring community water bodies, strengthening local institutions, promoting efficient water use and enabling community-led water planning can help build more resilient villages. At Vrutti, our work has supported the renovation of 88 tanks and ponds and construction of 80 farm ponds, creating approximately 2.56 lakh cubic metres of additional water storage capacity and benefiting around 2,450 farmers across nearly 3,500 acres. But lasting water security is about more than infrastructure. It is about community ownership, responsible water management and collective action. Read the blog to explore how water-secure villages can help build climate-resilient livelihoods, stronger communities and healthier ecosystems. 🔗 Read the full blog: https://vruttiimpactcatalysts.org/nrlm-water-secure-villages #ClimateResilience #WaterSecurity #WaterConservation #RuralLivelihoods #CommunityLedDevelopment #ClimateAction #Vrutti by @vrutti_lh
