📍///artfulness.adjusting.generously I'm seeing some new faces around here and it's been a while since I've said hi 👋 ~ So hi! My name is Dan-Tam and I'm a Canadian expat currently living in Nairobi. My crane journey started a couple of years ago when I was hopping around Europe and my wandering cranes have now followed me to the African continent 🦒🦁🦛 It's my hope to one day have lived on all continents (well, minus Antarctica) - 4 down, 2 more to go! Can you guess which two? I started this account as a way to digitally document my travels - but it's become a lovely way to interact with fellow wanderers, origamists and creative minds! I hope you enjoy the little tidbits I share about my destinations and sprinklings of scrapbook pages 🥰 ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
While I'm out here getting up close with Kenyan wildlife, there's also some experiences with animals back in Canada that are worth trying. One of them is Kinadapt, an outdoor activity centre that offers dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, canicross (cross-country running with dogs) and more! And it's just about 50 minutes from Montreal! ~ I'm a big fan of their winter activities, but you can plan a visit for the summer too. Would you go play with the huskies in winter or summer? by @wander.words.wings
📍///sunset.choreograph.evaporating Kenya is experiencing the worst drought crisis in 40 years. Without enough precipitation in the last four rainy seasons, there are parts of Kenya that are completely parched. ~ This of course impacts wildlife, but also impacts Kenyans living in drought stricken counties, leading to food insecurity, malnutrition, loss of crops and livestock, and displacement. #climatechangeisreal What effects have you felt or seen where you live? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
📍///cherished.gamed.hazing How many #zebras can you count? 🦓🦓👀 ➡️ SWIPE for more striped fellas and close-ups! ~ There weren't as many zebras in Amboseli National Park as some other parks I visited - the dreadful drought has left few patches of grass for zebra and wildebeest herds. Many have died of starvation or left to find greener pastures elsewhere. ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
📍///resilient.privileged.begins Our welcome party at the entrance to Amboseli National Park at the Kimana Gate! ~ Amboseli is known for its (big-tusked) elephants: within its 392 square kilometres reside over 1,600 African elephants. Not even five seconds after entering the park, we spotted 2 large elephants casually munching on some vegetation. ➡️ SWIPE for a closeup! ~ Have you seen an elephant before - African or Asian? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
My parents are currently visiting me in Kenya! So here's a throwback to when they met up with me in Germany while I was backpacking around Europe. ~ We met up in Munich and visited the city and its biegarten, did a castle tour of Bavaria and hiked a trail along wineries and vineyards in the Ahr wine region. All of that packed into 4 days before heading to the UK for my graduation. What a whirlwind! And their trip to Kenya is proving to be just as exciting ;) ~ When was the last time you traveled with family? by @wander.words.wings
📍///fictions.farmworker.retired Another attraction for a visit of Nairobi and surrounds: tea farms! ~ Did you know? Tea plays a key role in the Kenyan economy and makes Kenya one of the main tea producers in the world. Tea is planted, harvested and processed all year long in different districts and the final product is sent to the Mombasa Tea Auction, the second largest black tea auction in the world after Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Mombasa Tea Auction trades in teas from across East Africa and even from Mozambique and Madagascar! ~ Have you ever visited a tea farm before? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
📍///songs.raven.rush The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Elephant Nursery in Nairobi rescues orphaned calves whose mothers died from drought, human-wildlife conflict or other causes. Once old enough, the calves are reintegrated to the wild through a long and careful process. ~ The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust does impressive work with its nurseries, reintegration units, veterinary units and anti-poaching teams. A visit to the Nairobi nursery - which can be perfectly combined with a day in the Nairobi National Park - helps support their conservation efforts: you get to learn the calves' stories and personalities, and you can even adopt an elephant! My friend adopted little Kerrio who was just 7 months old when she was rescued and is now learning to be a big sister to younger orphans! ~ Have you ever been to a wildlife rescue centre? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
📍///budding.originate.assess Nairobi has been my home for almost a year and a half now! Time absolutely FLIES! ~ This might not be the most exceptional view, but it's special to me. Sharing with you a quick shot of a street I used to take to go home (before we moved to another house). Sometimes, instead of seeing squirrels darting up tree trunks like in Canada, I can spot a monkey or two dashing across the power lines as I drive by 🐒 ~ What's a little thing you always enjoy noticing in your neighbourhood? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
Time for a celebration! To celebrate the coming of a new year and celebrate all the beautiful things that we got to experience in the last year. 🥂 What will you be celebrating? ~ These scrapbook pages hold memories of Melbourne's White Night in 2016. I got to experience the city at night, fully transformed with installations, light shows, exhibits and street performances. I tried to capture the kaleidoscopic vibe with the colours and patterns, and neon overlays on the photos. by @wander.words.wings
📍///lashed.festivity.oblige For me, the holiday season just doesn't feel the same without the cold, snow and dark evenings lit up by colourful lights! ~ For those who celebrate Christmas in the warmer regions of the world, what do you associate the festive season with? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
📍///inviting.blaze.requires It's this time of year when I miss home the most as an expat! So bear with me as I hit pause on my East Africa photos and share photos of snowy Ottawa! ~ This is the Rideau Canal. In winter, it becomes the largest skating rink in the world. Stretching 7.8km throughout the city, it's the go-to place for a fun outdoor activity, weekend family outings or even weekday commutes! Yes yes, I used to skate to work and take work breaks on the ice with my colleagues! ~ What do you do when you're homesick? ~ I use the ///what3words coordinate system to locate where my #wanderingcrane flies to. by @wander.words.wings
