POSTS STORIES REELS

What has been your favorite read since the beginning of the year?
.
I managed to finish only 1 book this month, but what a great story it was!
The Hand of the Sun King by J.T. Greathouse is about Wen Alder, a young boy growing up between two cultures : his Father is from the Empire of Sien, and expecting Alder to study, follow the principles of the Empire, and bring pride to his family. His Mother is from Nayen, a province invaded by the Empire. His Grandmother is a witch and a resistant, trying to protect her people from the cruelty of the Empire.
Ambitious, curious, and eager to form his own path away from his families’ expectations, Alder becomes a scholar with the hope of becoming one day the Hand of the Emperor, and learn all about the magic that only the Emperor’s Hands are allowed to wield.
.
The Hand of the Sun King is a coming of age story, and a very well-done one. It was glorious to see Alder grow, learn from his mistakes, and find himself. We follow his relationships with different characters (mentors, friends…), and how they all defined the person that he becomes at the end. This is not a very epic story, but the magic, the lush world and the characters all made the novel very immersive.
The story is told in first person narrative, which I tend not to like, but I thought it worked very well. The prose is elegant and captivating. I saw some reviews comparing it to Robin Hobb’s work, and I agree that it has some similar themes and a loneliness undertone. In my opinion, if you like to follow Fitz, you will most likely enjoy Alder’s story. A brilliant debut!

💫 Happy New Year! 💫
.
It is January 1st, and I hope you could all have a great New Year’s Eve celebration. Are you all prepared for 2022? I am keeping my expectations low, as 2021 taught me not to be too hopeful too fast 😆 But I am still looking forward to see what the year will bring.
.
Since I am always late, here is the list of my favorite books of the past year. I forgot a couple of them (I should have included Amari and The Night Brothers, Illborn and The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation 🙈). There is no particular order, all those books had a strong impact on me, and made my year. And except for Sanderson, all where new-to-me authors.
✨ I am very happy I started to dive into two long and popular finished series (WoT and Realms of the Elderlings).
✨ The Councillor and The Library of the Dead were two debut novels that completely captivated me.
✨ The Stone Knife and Dragon Mage were two fantastic beginnings to new epic series. I will jump on the sequels as soon as they are released!
✨ Rhythm of War was an absolute delight to read, an excellent continuation of the Stormlight Archive.

What book did you really want to read this year, but didn’t?
.
There were so many stories I was looking forward to read this year, and I failed a lot of them 😅 Which is ok, they will still be here next year, waiting to bring me joy and/or despair (hopefully both).
.
From this pile, I was really hoping to discover Son of the Storm, She Who Became The Sun, and The Hand of the Sun king . And John Gwynne! After all the good things I have heard, I really want to start one of his series soon. I am eyeing both Malice and Shadow of the Gods as potential choices for my January TBR.

🎄 Are you reading something this weekend?
.
🎄 Hello everyone, Happy Boxing Day! I hope you are all having a fantastic weekend, and that you could celebrate Christmas the way you wanted! It is Sunday night here, I feel exhausted, but in a good way 😁 I couldn’t go back to my country this year, but we did as best as we could, and had a pretty fun time. I am grateful for being able to be with my family, and I send love to all of those who didn’t have this chance, or who are suffering during this Holiday ♥️
.
I was lucky enough to receive a few books as Christmas presents. One of them being this lovely anniversary edition of Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, a series I have been meaning to try for a while.

What book(s) surprised you this year?
.
I read Illborn by @danieltjackson_illborn and Soul of the World by David Mealing during the Summer/Autumn, and they quickly climbed on my top10 favorite reads of the year!
.
Soul of the World is an epic fantasy series with a unique magic system and setting, that completely drew me in. The story is complex and fascinating, mixing shamanism and elements from the French Revolution. I have book 2 in my TBR, and will get to it when I am out of my current little slump 😁
.
Illborn is gripping, immersive, and simply brilliant. From the first few pages, I was completely lost in the story, to the point I sometimes put the book down, not sure what time of the day it was. The plot is intricate, character-driven (and all the characters are fantastic, so easy to love!), and the World very rich. Daniel Jackson’s writing is excellent! He certainly knows how to take the reader on a ride, with a story full of suspense and twists. To say it is partly responsible for said little slump wouldn’t be exaggerated 😁 Highly recommend!

🎄 Hello everyone! What was the last book you finished?
.
🎄 It has been a while! 👋 Sorry for the long silence, and thank you to all of you who stayed around and checked on me! I needed a little pause, and I am now (tentatively) trying to get back into a more regular posting schedule.
But first : How are you all doing? How is the end of the year looking up for you ? Will you be able to spend time with your loved ones?
.
🎄 The Holiday season is filling me with new positive energy, and I hope it lasts 😜 I even cook for pleasure, which I didn’t know was possible! 😁
I was in the mood to take a few pictures again this morning, and it made me feel good! One thing for sure : I missed taking photos, interacting with you all and check everyone’s posts. I hope you are all well ♥️

What are you excited to read in November?
.
October was a slow month for me, which I was expecting anyway. I finished Monstress and Cemetery Boys, and am in the middle of The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan, and Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith. Overall, it is still Robert Jordan who provided my favorite reading experience of the month, even though I didn’t finish it yet 😅
.
For November, I am very looking forward to re-reading Skyward and Starsight 🤩 I read Skyward before diving into Sanderson’s big adult fantasy series, so I am excited to see if I still love it as much now.
.
I hope you all had a great Halloween if you celebrate it! Did you dress up this year?

📚 Book review 📚
Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda
Genre : graphic novel, adult fantasy
5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
.
It takes a lot for a graphic novel to impress me, but Monstress managed, with its aesthetic and compelling story, to do exactly that.
The story follows Maika Halfwolf, a teenage girl struggling to survive the trauma of war, and to contain the monster inside of her. She goes on a quest to find answers about her past, carrying with her a very valuable and sought after item…
.
There are a lot of informations in this novel, the worldbuilding is extensive, and we are thrown into the story without many explanation. For that reason, it can feel a bit overwhelming at times, and I think too much for some readers, but I personally liked it that way. It felt like reading an epic fantasy novel, and I was particularly immersed in the world.
The artwork is stunning. Certainly the most beautiful graphic novel I have ever read. I could stay staring at some pages for a while, just admiring the details. Sana Takeda is an amazing artist, and her art is the reason why I wanted to try this novel in the first place.
It might be beautiful, but it is quite gory and very brutal. TW include slavery, violence towards children, murder, torture, assault, human trafficking, cannibalism… Something to consider before giving it a try.
.
Overall, it was an amazing read, dark and brutal, but an excellent story with complexe characters and interesting lore. I cannot wait to continue the series!

QOTD : What is one book you are hoping to read before the end of the year?
.
I got tagged by @allomantic_reader to do the #fourforfour challenge, so here are four books I want to read in the next four months. Those have been in my immediate TBR for a while now, but my Wheel of Time journey is taking a lot of my reading time (and I am enjoying every second of it). Several good-looking books are patiently waiting longer for their turn 😁
.
AOTD : Besides those 4, I will probably read Cytonic before the end of the year, and I am also hoping to squeeze No Place For Peace somewhere before January.

What have you been reading lately? And what have you planned for the weekend?
.
Hello everyone! It is Friday night, I had a streak of pretty stressing and busy days, and now it’s finally back to an almost normal rhythm. I am exhausted, but relieved, and I feel ready to post. Sorry for everything I missed (again 🙈).
.
The beginning of the weekend calls for a necessary wine + solo-boardgaming evening, followed by some quiet reading time 😁 I am still not too far into The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan, but it has been a comfort read lately. it’s excellent, nothing to say, and I love how dark the atmosphere is becoming.
.
Here is a little #facesonspines book stack, as I have been tagged by the lovely @vanbuurenlibrary for to create one❤️ Feel free to take part in the challenge!
.
Have a wonderful weekend! 💕

Hello everyone!
.
I know I haven’t been very present last month, and I missed a lot of posts, so I will try to catch up this week. I won’t be able to post as much as I wish during the first 2 weeks of October, but I will do my best to find a little time 😁 So tell me, what book(s) are you starting October with?
.
Here is a little list of my October hopefuls! I have already started with The Shadow Rising, and I am still in the middle of Illborn, so they will take me a little time. They are both excellent 😍
Build Your House Around my Body and Cemetery Boys, are my Halloween themed books of the month, so I want to read them before October ends. Dreams of the Dying is one I really hope I can start, but i am not too optimistic about it 😅
Have you read, or do you plan to read any of them?

$Do you have a favorite graphic novel? . 📚 Book review 📚 Skyward, Vol.1 : My Low-G Life By Joe Henderson, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela 4 ,5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 💫 . One day, gravity on Earth suddenly became a fraction of what it is now. Twenty years later, humanity has adapted to its new low-gravity reality. And to Willa Fowler, a woman born just after G-day, it's...well, it's pretty awesome, actually. You can fly through the air! That is, until she comes across a secret plan to bring gravity back. . Skyward is a graphic novel I was looking forward to read for a while. The premise sounded so unique and creative, and I like the idea of low gravity on Earth. Who wouldn’t like to fly? Well, it turns out this is a scarier concept than I originally thought 😅 This first volume was very entertaining, with great ideas about how the world keeps functioning. I am not sure if everything makes sense, from a scientific point of view, but I don’t really care too much, the ideas were cool! We follow young people who cannot imagine a world with gravity (and don’t want it), and the older ones who suffered from the change. The storyline is quite captivating, and left me needing more. I would have loved to learn more information about how the gravity could disappear, and how the rest of the world is dealing with it. But it seems like we will know more about the people responsible for the situation in the sequel. I found the art style very beautiful, and the bright and bold colors make it visually appealing. My only small complain would be that the bad guy is a bit cliché, but it didn’t bother me too much. . Overall, a short, unique, fast-paced and very enjoyable read. I would highly recommend! . . . by @wandering.in.imaginary.lands$
