Drawing up a storm: Our 3rd years at the Biennale di Venezia have been sketching modern architecture in the Giardini. #venicebiennale #biennaledivenezia #biennale #venice #carloscarpa by @warwickhoa

Our third years had an incredible time in Padua on Tuesday! Starting the day off at the Scrovegni Chapel (also known as the Arena Chapel), whose magnificent fresco interior was completed by Giotto di Bondone in 1305, also paying the site museum a visit!🎨
We also visited the Padova Duomo and baptistery, along with the civic town hall! 🇮🇹

It was an incredible day and our third years thoroughly enjoyed it!

Follow along for more amazing Italian site visits, as well as next week’s 50th anniversary celebrations, where our department will be celebrating 50 years of teaching History of Art in Venice! 🍾🥂

Come with our third years to visit the Venetian lagoon islands, Torcello and Murano!📍🇮🇹

We started the day in Torcello, where we started by seeing the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca! The religious complex was consecrated in the early 11th century, yet there is archaeological evidence that dates as early as the 6th century! It was incredible to see the many layers of history that had moulded what can be seen in Torcello today!

We then headed off to Murano, where we learnt the history of Murano glass in the Museo del Vetro! Learning about how to archeological findings of Roman glass influences Renaissance glass making, and the techniques mastered over 500 years ago can still be seen today! We also visited the Church of Santa Maria e San Donato, which is known for its 12th century Byzantine pavement and the relics of Saint Donatus of Arezzo, along with the bones of the dragon that was slain by the saint!

Overall, it was an incredible day and our third years loved it! Follow along to see more trips to locations such as Padua and Verona!🇮🇹🎨

Please join us at the Warwick Venice Centre, next Wednesday, 28th Oct at 18.00 for a public lecture by South African academic and architect Prof. Noëleen Murray.

“Learning from Rome (and Venice)” is a series of reflections on an architectural intervention in the African desert in the 1970s in South Africa under apartheid. Long since abandoned for a newer complex, the Steinkopf Community Centre’s principal architect, Roelof Uytenbogaardt, drew inspiration for the building from time in Italy. He won the Prix de Rome and lived and travelled in Italy from 1957-1959, around the time that American architect Robert Venturi was also a Rome Scholar. Venturi and his partner Denise Scott Brown, along with Steven Izenour, would later develop their seminal field study Learning from Las Vegas in which they literally drew a line of reference back to Rome. Noëleen Murray is a Cape Town based architect and academic who has worked on the archive of Uytenbogaardt since his death in 1998, and for the past 15 years she and photographer Svea Josephy have been documenting his buildings in their current states, and afterlives.

@millieatmuseums concludes her time as a British Pavilion Fellow for the Venice Fellowship Programme 2026, representing the University of Warwick @warwickhoa and the British Council. She was at the Bienalle for a month this summer working on a personal research project, and acting as an ambassador for the 2026 commission, Lubiana Himid’s ‘Predicting History Testing Translation’ with Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia. by @warwickhoa

Daniel Rathbone just returned from a fieldwork trip to South Africa, funded by the Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership, for his PhD project, ‘The People’s Parks, Contested Public Spaces and Lost Heritage in Urban South Africa’. Key to his research is the photographic history of the People’s Parks.

During this research trip, he spent his time visiting archives and libraries across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town. Much of this was spent trawling through stacks of clippings, dusty bound volumes of newspapers, or scanning microfilm reels; all to find new photographs or first-hand accounts from the 1980s. He also conducted interviews, adding to a growing oral history of the Parks. by @warwickhoa

Today our third years visited the Correr Museum and the Palazzo Ducale in San Marco’s square. It was an incredible experience to see elements of our previous lectures in person, and the fabulous tours led by lecturers Louise Bourdua and Marta Ajmar on the current Venice module topics of venetian history and architecture!🇮🇹🎨
