Meet Fiep, the purpose and passion driven maker behind @studio_fiep 🔥😌

When asking her about why she would dedicate her time to waste alchemy, she said that “It feels like magic time and time again seeing dirty waste material on the street and transform it into a colourful, waterproof product that can be loved again!“ 😍

Unlike mass-produced products, she handcrafts each peace transforming it into a bright and colourful valuable peace of art (that is at the same time very handy and practical 😉).

Still, for her, part of the bigger dream has to do with a bigger purpose and creating an upcycle collective that supports makers and inspires/educates all sorts of visitors!! So make sure to reach out to her to team up!

Check out her socials and stay tuned for the next posts about the waste she rescues, the products she crafts, and the behind the scenes 💡

Transforming post-consumer and corporate textile waste into awesome products 👕 ♻️

Several weeks ago I got welcomed by Eva from @ididnl at their unique factory in The Hague. She introduced me to Mireille (founder & director), Michiel (director) and many more of their great team. And then the adventure began!

I got to discover the behind the scenes of their circular- and social-driven company and documented it all with my camera. Et voilà, I am happy to share with you the resulting aftermovie 🎬

If you want to see less of the about 330 million kg of textile waste from the Netherlands ending up in landfills, then you can make a difference in many ways. Here some examples:

🎁 If you need accessories, lamps, acoustic panels and/or gifts, get them from purpose-driven brands like i-did
💬 Reach out to i-did in order to find out options for your and/or your company’s textile waste
💪🏼 Share this video and spread the word about @ididnl and @waste.alchemists

Let’s transform waste into awesome products, together!
Hugs,
Sam

Meet Janne & Mirthe, the creative minds behind @hollandswolcollectief ! 🐑💡

Three years ago, they started their collective after discovering that a lot of Dutch wool was just being wasted. 🤯

Farmers struggle to receive a fair price for it, while at the same time, product designers are struggling to find local, bio based and circular materials.

So, they decided to change that. By rescuing Dutch wool in big scale, giving it value again, and turning it into high-quality felt. In other words, they are bridging the gap between farmers and sustainable makers. 😌👏🏽

In the next posts, you are going to find out more about the otherwise wasted wool, the material they make from it, the process, and an aftervideo to summarize everything in a nutshell! Thanks for having me Hollands Wol Collectief and also thanks to @dekroonrotterdam for creating such beautiful location :)

Talking about transforming waste into awesome products 😌

PID Atelier transforms discarded leather into wrist straps, wallets, cardholders, glasses cases, notebook covers, coasters, keychains and personalised business gifts.

What's really special about his products is that they are quite diverse and something most of us have with us day to day. On top of that, Jochem Duyff makes sure he selects vegetable tanned leather, in other words, natural organic tannins.

And finally, he always gives the opportunity to personalise his creations with names or company logos. So if if you're still on the lookout for a personalised gift, you know where to find them 😊

♻️ A lot of PID Atelier’s process transforming waste is inspired by origami-like folding techniques

Instead of adding more materials or more complexity, Jochem Duyff often removes elements until only the essential structure remains. That means, products are often constructed from a single folded piece of leather, avoiding glue, unnecessary stitching and mixed materials wherever possible. This keeps the products strong, repairable and easier to reuse again in the future. 💪🏼

The process combines digital design thinking with hands-on craftsmanship. Leather is selected carefully, cut precisely, folded into shape and assembled by hand in his atelier in Nijmegen’s @nyma_makersplaats. For larger orders, PID Atelier collaborates with a social workplace, combining ecological impact with social impact in the same process 😌

You read it right! Apparently, about 33% of leather that is purchased from production companies, ends up as cutting waste.

PID Atelier mainly works with rescued vegetable-tanned leather, often coming from leftover streams in the bag and fashion industry. These are high-quality leather pieces that are too small, irregular or surplus for larger productions and would otherwise risk ending up unused or discarded. Instead of treating these leftovers as secondary material, Jochem embraces their limitations. Available colours and quantities often depend entirely on what leather is rescued at that moment, making each production run slightly different.

*The 33% estimate aligns with the industrial data published by @unido_org , cutting waste during the manufacturing of finished leather goods routinely ranges between 25% and 60% due to the natural irregularities and flaws inherent to animal hides. by @waste.alchemists

FROM LEATHER WASTE TO AWESOME PRODUCTS 😍

Drumrolls for new @waste.alchemists Jochem from PID Atelier 🥁🎉

About 33% of a leather hide is wasted during the manufacturing process. Jochem mainly rescues the vegetable-tanned leather coming from leftover streams in the bag and fashion industry.

By seeing this leather as a valuable resource instead of waste, he transforms it into awesome products like wallets, glasses cases, notebook covers, keychains, and much more. He also offers to personalise his creations for businesses or personal gifts and is also starting to give workshops. 😌

From carpet tile and concrete waste to rugs, flooring, wall tiles and climate-adaptive paving 🏡♻️😍

@studio_wae transforms these two completely different waste streams into awesome floorings that you can combine like designer building blocks.

🛋️ Inside, the discarded carpet tiles become modular rugs, flooring, and wall tiles. They have over 500 colours and diverse stylish shapes to choose from.

🌳 Outside, the concrete waste gets transformed into climate-adaptive paving that creates room for rainwater and biodiversity instead of covering everything up solid concrete. Also here they have designer shapes to choose from, even for parkings.

Around 7 million kg of raw materials reused by @studio_wae who works with two very different waste streams:

1) Carpet tiles: These are rejected during production because of small cutting or weaving imperfections. The interesting part? The material itself is still perfectly usable. On top of that, there are a lot of leftover tiles for every project… And with around 500 different colours delivered to Studio Wae, these “leftovers” become a huge creative playground 😱

2) Then there is concrete waste from demolished buildings and railway infrastructure. Instead of disappearing underneath roads as low-value material, Studio Wae keeps it in circulation!

According to their calculations, using this “waste” also had as consequence reducing 1.433.626kg CO2 emissions 🤯

Meet the alchemists from @studio_wae 🏡♻️

What if the most beautiful floors we walk on would be made from waste? Well, Studio Wae could make this possible 😌

Founded by Tynke, they transform discarded carpet tiles and concrete waste into modular rugs, flooring, wall tiles and climate-adaptive paving. Their creations feel modern, colourful and high-end, yet every single one starts with a material that would otherwise have been wasted.

One thing we immediately noticed when visiting them? Their office almost feels like a little museum of circular design, filled with their own creations as well as products from fellow waste alchemists they collaborate with.
