POSTS STORIES REELS

Ybor City’s story lives in more than its landmarks. It lives in the bricks, the details and the people who share this space.

Photojournalist Dave Decker captures those elements with the perspective of someone who grew up exploring the neighborhood and understands the energy that makes it unlike anywhere else.

His work reminds us that preserving Ybor means knowing its history, noticing its character and continuing to tell the stories that hold this community together. by @watson33569

Spotlight Interview via @newnoisemagazine

Really honored to be featured in this month’s New Noise and grateful to @coennoinsta for taking the time chat about past and current events regarding my experiences as a photojournalist, band member and old man skateboarder.

Additional thanks to friend and colleague @jimvondruska for making this portrait at the last minute — City Hall in Minneapolis seconds before the Jake Lang event spiraled into frozen chaos.

Thanks @agrayphot0 @scootercaster @noturtlesoup17 @jonfarina @just1dudewithacamera @mthornphoto @octaviojones @nategowdy @rehabforcandy @ethannoahroyphoto @jasonalpertwisnia @andrewmercado0
and more for looking out up there.

I’m forgetting folks but work never ends.

@christopher_morris_vii is an icon and mentor and his body of work blindly instructs my eyes.

Grateful for opportunity and fellowship.

Thank you @peeweeslittleadventure @cltampabay A.C. Thompson @gabrielleschonder @frontlinepbs and @zumapress

TONIGHT AT THE FLORIDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS

As a rule I don’t ever publish images of myself on this account.

It’s only intended to show documentary work.

Rules are meant to be broken.

Truly honored to have been awarded first place in the @fmopa members show (Documentary category) and recognized by my fellow photographers and community members.

Everything in the show is rooted with impeccable visual story telling techniques so thanks again for the honor.

So grateful for the opportunity to shoot side-by-side with some of the greatest photojournalists in the world in Chicago.

Special thanks to @sonicgabephotos and @reedyphoto for the print.

I also can’t forget to thank @zumapress (for the assignment) @coastalfilmlab @rayroa and @cltampabay

There is so much work to do.

So many stories to tell.

Music

The incomparable @arewenothomefront delivering food for the soul to a packed out @bodiddleyplazagnv for the @thefestfl

@swemba and myself shot 4 songs for a multi cam video edit but I was able to take some time to make still images of brilliant set.

On a personal note: This band drives me through the down times. It’s difficult to put into words but that’s the power of music for me.

We document. Everything is art.

New Work

A true honor to take an assignment with the @bloomberg team to make visuals for this massive story.

Many thanks to @mountainlion6 for the trust and guidance.

Slide 4 thru 10 are outtakes.

“Inside was where the magic happened. For 20 years, Crowbar’s single, 300-person room served as a place to hear unknown artists before they broke or popular acts offering more intimate shows. Musicians as different as rock band OK Go, country’s Kenny Chesney and indie-pop singer Chappell Roan graced its stage. A generation of local rappers honed their skills there.

On July 31, Crowbar closed its doors for the last time, beset by rising costs and the elephant in any discussion about concerts in the US: Live Nation Entertainment Inc. The colossus — which owns and operates arenas and clubs in multiple countries, runs America’s biggest ticketing service and manages musicians’ careers — plans to open its own venue nearby. For Crowbar’s final show, rapper Talib Kweli flew down from New York City, with local hip hop artists joining him onstage.

Across the country, some 480 independent venues and 240 music festivals have shut since 2020, with 160 shuttering so far this year, according to the National Independent Venue Association, a trade group for the industry. While the Covid-19 pandemic and surging inflation each played a role, so has the market power of Live Nation, according to Crowbar owner Tom DeGeorge and other independents. They struggle to compete against a $40 billion company that can steer artists to play one venue and avoid others while exerting significant control over ticket pricing through its Ticketmaster subsidiary.” - Leah Nylen
