Robert Hawkins, an important figure in the history of African-American golf, was once the manager of Wayland's own Sandy Burr Country Club! He went on to build and operate Mapledale Country Club, a Black golf course and country club in Stow, now known as Stow Acres. It was the first course of this kind in Massachusetts, and one of the earliest Black-owned, operated, and designed golf courses in the country. A pop-up exhibit celebrating Hawkins' achievements by @rediscovermapledale is on display at the Wayland Museum for the month of October and you still have a chance to see it! Come by and learn more about this wonderful history with ties to Wayland. While there, you can check out our sports exhibit, The Home Team, which celebrates all types of sport and play in Wayland. @sandyburrcc by @waylandmuseum

A sneak peek of our upcoming MCM House Tour! Wayland is famous for its colonial homes, but tucked into our wooded roads is a lesser-known architectural legacy, born after WW II when a wave of forward-thinking architects and builders reimagined what a home could be and how it could situate in and amongst a landscape. Join us on Sunday, October 25, to explore this era in Wayland's history. Tickets are at the link in bio or on our website, waylandmuseum.org. by @waylandmuseum

For the month of October, The “On the Road” Traveling Exhibition on The History of Mapledale Country Club will be at Wayland Museum - Wayland Historical Society. Did you know Robert H. Hawkins was also a manager of Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Massachusetts?

Museum Hours:
Tuesday & Thursday: 9:30am – 12:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am – 2:00pm
Or email info@waylandmuseum.org to book an appointment to visit.

With help from our historical consultants Kathryn Harris and Douglas Stark of Interpreting Sports, our organization developed a three-panel display outlining the background of Robert Hawkins and Mapledale, as well as the history of Black golf in America.

Rediscover Mapledale will display the exhibition free of charge to area schools, libraries, museums, historical societies, and community spaces in Stow and surrounding communities.

We welcome anyone with an opportunity to host the traveling exhibition to contact rediscovermapledale@gmail.com.

This exhibit was made possible thanks to Freedom’s Way National Heritage Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area, the Mass Cultural Councill, Stow Cultural Council, and the Lancaster Cultural Council. Hosted by Rediscover Mapledale, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with the long-lasting vision to continue to commemorate Black history in Stow, Massachusetts. by @waylandmuseum
