So, what does it take to start a voice-over career at 75? 🎙️

Apparently, more than a microphone!

I built a little recording booth using PVC pipe, moving blankets, and a healthy dose of trial and error.

It’s not exactly a Hollywood recording studio. But it gives me a place to learn, practice, record auditions, and work on my craft.

I’ve discovered that voice-over involves much more than having a good voice. There’s recording software, sound quality, microphone technique, interpreting scripts, and plenty of starting over.

I’m still learning. And yes, sometimes the technology wins!

But every new skill is a small victory, and every finished project reminds me why I started.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes you just need to take that first step.

At 75, I’m still opening new doors.

At 75, I started a new adventure. 🎙️

Funny thing is, I wasn’t even looking for one.

I was scrolling through YouTube when I came across Jesse Carroll, founder of Voice Over School, explaining how to get started in voice-over.

He talked about the equipment, the training, and the work involved. It made sense to me.

I thought, “I could do that.”

So I did.

I began in December 2025, knowing practically nothing about recording. Since then, I’ve learned about microphones, recording software, building a DIY home studio, and auditioning in an industry with thousands of talented people.

There’s been a lot to learn—and plenty of competition!

But one of the best feelings is hearing a finished paid project and realizing that your voice has helped bring someone else’s idea to life.

I’m still learning, still working, and still discovering what’s possible.

My year in southern France taught me that adventure can come in many forms. Sometimes it’s a new place. Sometimes it’s a new career.

And sometimes, it’s simply deciding to give something a try.

The best adventures begin when you open a new door.

One of our early adventures in France involved finding a bus at Toulouse airport. 🇫🇷

Catharine had a couple of years of high school French. I had practically none.

She approached the information desk and began, “I don’t speak French…”

Before she could finish, the woman replied in English:

“I know!”

We got a good laugh out of that.

During our year in southern France, we learned that a few words, a translator app, hand gestures, and a willingness to try could get us through most situations.

The French people we met were wonderfully helpful.

We just sometimes wished we could start a conversation as easily as we could back home.

But that’s part of the adventure, isn’t it?

Normandy is an experience that stays with you!
Standing on Omaha Beach, I found myself imagining the young American soldiers coming ashore on D-day June 6, 1945. So young. So scared. Facing something most of us can scarcely imagine. At the American Cemetery, the rows of headstones made the cost of their sacrifice impossible to ignore. We visited Utah Beach and its museum, and the small town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where the story of the American paratroopers is remembered. And in Bayeux, we shared a simple French breakfast and met a Belgian mother and her delightful children, who were eager to practice their English. History, remembrance, and unexpected connections—all part of our year in France. Some places you visit. Others stay with you. #normandy #omahabeach #utahbeach #americancemetary #lifeinfrance by @waynekurtzvoiceover

LAKE de Mirande and Grande Baise river (Gers) We lived about 1/2 mile (.805km) walking distance, from this lake and body of river water. We would go for a walk around the lake couple times a week. French Countryside is all so beautiful and serene…. by @waynekurtzvoiceover
