One hand for Dylan. The other one free, which in London means free for a coffee, a dropped glove, or a child who has decided to walk backwards.

The Felix sling from Hindbag sits across your back and stays there. Big enough for phone, keys, cards and the snack you were told you wouldn’t need. Fair Trade certified, made in India.

Grey denim or blue.

Four days of rain. Four days of the orange coat, worn with the commitment of a man in uniform.

Today, without explanation or warning, he chose the indigo one.

We stock both because children are exactly like this. They pick one thing, wear it into the ground, then change their mind for reasons nobody can establish.

Oaki waterproof jacket, sizes 2 to 8.

Hooded, properly waterproof, packs down small enough to live in a school bag.

Tested by Dylan, who has now tested two of them.

Three days of rain. Three colours in the shop.

Valley green, £45. Hooded, waterproof, packs down into a school bag.

The orange one has been worn into the ground. The indigo made a surprise appearance on Friday. This one is still waiting its turn.

Rain since Wednesday night, no sign of stopping.
He has worn the orange one every day since it arrived. Every single day.
This morning he stopped at the door and looked at the other one.

Which did he pick? We’ll settle it in the comments.

Three from The QT. We chose each one for a different reason.

The joggers have knee patches. Not decoration. Knees go first, every time, and these are ready for it.

The stripe top is the loud one. Rainbow on cream, and nobody is losing it in the cloakroom.

The navy zip-up is the quiet one that ends up worn every day. Deep hood, real pockets.

Organic cotton throughout. Made to be moved in.

We said this bag goes in the washing machine. Not wipe clean, not sponge it and hope. In the machine.

Here it is, going in the machine.

Delicate cycle, warm, air dry. Built to be washed and washed again, which matters when a school bag spends ten months collecting yoghurt, mud and whatever lives in the bottom pocket.

Fluf B Pack Jr, £58, 14 litres, organic cotton canvas.

It goes in the washing machine. That is most of the reason we stocked it.

Every school bag ends the term sticky. Yoghurt, mud, something unidentifiable in the bottom pocket. The Fluf B Pack Jr goes in on a delicate wash and comes out looking like September again.

Dylan has both sizes. The big one for heavy days, this one for the days we win the packed lunch argument. Fourteen litres, takes an A4 book and a water bottle, nothing more.

Navy, mustard handles, cream zips. Tested by Dylan, and by the dog.

Walk past the school gates in November and count the navy coats.

We are not going to pretend that is a scandal. It is just that nobody ever asked the child.

We stock jackets a seven-year-old would choose for himself, which is a different brief entirely, and it is the whole reason this shop exists.

First cold morning in London. Dylan has asked if we can go back to Spain. He has a point. Boardwalk, skateboard, sunshine. Today’s forecast says otherwise.

Three jackets. Three arguments.

Most children's coats are navy. We do not stock a single one.

The NASA flight jacket is the lighter one, for the child who runs hot. The Space Shuttle bomber carries four real retired mission patches, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour and Columbia, because whoever made it checked which shuttles actually flew. The MA-1 reverses to an orange lining, which is not a styling choice, it is the emergency visibility colour real pilots wear.

One of them will be the one he refuses to take off. We cannot tell you which.

Dylan has opened a shop in the back garden.

On offer: footballs, rackets, water guns and three mystery containers. Contents undisclosed, price non-negotiable.

The stock is everything Mum has ever bought him. The customer is Mum. Once she’s paid, he keeps the stuff anyway.

We don’t do resale. Dylan does, and his margins are better than ours.

For the days you refuse to carry a bag.

The Hindbag Felix sling. Phone, keys, wallet, the snack someone will definitely ask for, and nothing you didn't need to bring. Three zipped pockets, including a flat one at the back for the things you'd rather not advertise.

Heavy organic cotton twill, GOTS certified, in dark grey denim. The strap clips on either side, so it works whichever shoulder you favour.

Tested by Pam. Taken to the park, handed everything a small person no longer wanted to hold, and still zipped shut.

Grown-up sized, although Dylan tried it on for fun.
